Hi, so i recently started using the private internet access VPN. The problem i am having is with the service turned on i can only load the very top of Amazon pages. If i turn the service off the page loads no problem. Does anyone know how to fix this? The only setting i changed was turning on DNS leak protection. Any help would be very appreciated.
I'm a complete newcomer to this stuff. I too bought the PIA VPN and personally had no issues until i switched to AES256 encryption. I live in the US and have it set to automatically choose a server and after testing via testmy.net my internet speeds (on wireless) remain ~ 18 or so mbs. I would ensure that the server selection function is either auto or selected to one near you if you live outside the United States. I can't speak to DNS leak protection or the kill switch because i have not yet enabled them (want to read up a bit more about what they are). I hope this helps even a little and i'm sure someone with more experience / knowldge than me will be able to give you a hand.
does it work when you turn dns leak off?
They recommend using the default settings (but it doesn't excuse it from not working otherwise). Maybe set everything back to defaults and if that works. If it does, you'll have a starting point.
I turned on DNS Leak protection and internet kill switch and have no problems. May want to make sure you are not accidentally connecting to a server outside the US.
Okay so i have an update. The problem is now fixed, it was only happening when i would open a amazon page through a external link like from an email. If i go straight to amazon it all works fine. I was using the midwest US server and have now switched it to auto, with dns leak on and just the default encryption. I think the problem had to do with the encryption options i had set up at the time. If i remember right i had AED-256, SHA2 and RSA-2048, this combo killed my speed and had weird issues with how pages loaded. Switching back to the default has fixed everything.
Okay so i also had a new problem which was when i would disconnect from the VPN service i wasn't able to access the internet. The problem was that exiting the application did not fix the problem. For some reason the network settings never got set back. The way i fixed it was to switch it off in the application, disable the ethernet port and than uninstalled and re-installed the LAN drivers. BTW to re-install all you need to do is close and reopen device manager.
PIA installs and sets up a "virtual" network adapter, with their settings, and routs your traffic through it. If for some reason you lose connection, it should re-route your internet back to your correct adapter. Unless you have the killswitch on. Then it will disable your internet if you close PIA.
As phantom said, the kill switch function seems to have been operating properly. If you disable kill switch, i think it will automatically reverse whatever changes are made when kill switch is turned back on - that is based on what i was reading over on their website.
I never enabled the kill switch only DNS leak protection. The problem seems to have been caused by some combination of the encryption settings i was using and the DNS leak. After i set everything back to the defaults its working fine. Unfortunately i am still having weird variance in download speed and ping. Sometimes i hit 120mbps with a ping under 50 and 10 minutes later it will be 5-10mbps with 150+ ping. BTW my plan is supposed to be 24 up 5 down.
I just started using it, it takes my internet speed from 56 mbps to 9 mbps. Bitter pill to swallow.
