Is this pc decent for gaming?

I am looking to build my first pc, I am in Australia and use Aud, i dont need peripherals and i dont need an os. For me this pc with case fans is $759 Aud or $578 Usd. i look to be playing games like skyrim with mods and texture packs, survival games and other popular titles like shadows of mordor and the far cry franchise. For Fps i'd be fine with 40-60 on high or ultra settings

CPU - AMD FX-6300
Mobo - ASRock 970-PRO3.R2
SSD - Kingston SSDnow SV300S37A/120G
GPU - Gigabyte GV-R9 270 OC-2G
PSU - SilverStone ST50F-ES230 Essential 230V 500W
RAM - Kingston HX318C10FBK2/8 8GB(2x4G) Kit 1866Mhz
Case - Fractal Design Core 2500 ATX Case USB3.0 Black
HDD - an old hard drive

What resolution is your monitor? 1080p ?

You're gonna get medium ish settings with that card, you need at least a 280 or 280x to accomplish what you want

I would make every effort to get the FX 8350 over the FX 6300 as it is the recommended AMD proc for upcoming games like Star Citizen and not much more expensive.
Also I would go with an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 rather than the ASRock, better chipset and beter brand same price.
The Radeon 270 is a good GPU just get the 270x the vapor edition

Overall, will cost you maybe 70$ more but much better PC

It is decent for 1080p games for now. I got an 270 non-overclocked (with an 8350 and 16GB of ram) and I could get ultra on DA:I (40-60) and high on Witcher 3 around 35-40FPS. At least for the games you are talking about it should be decent for 1080p.

Expect more often high than ultra, though, and this set up will grow old relatively soon. I would increase the RAM a bit or go for a 280 or higher to give this a bit more lifetime, if your budget allows it. An 8350 is a good idea too.

Pro Tip: Don't use "old hard drives", they are usually slow (which really impacts your PC's performance) and bad sectors tend to appear on those.

I'm rather fond of the Seagate sshd hybrid instead of a ssd and a hdd

I see that you have a 120gb ssd as part of the build which you are going to couple with a large slow hd for files and that is only really relevant to productivity rather than gaming.

Most games you would want installed on the ssd and 120gb isnt enough.

It does come down a lot to the type of games you play though, the worst ones for this type of setup are if they use in-game streaming textures or content and this can kill performance OR visual quality in modern game engines (things just look horrid while you are waiting for them to load, totally ruins immersiveness).

If most of the games you play dont do any form of streaming then your drive combination is fine.

I 2nd the 8350, might as well spend the extra couple of pounds on it as we are so close to dx12 / win 10 core counts is actually going to be relevant for gaming.

My personal choice for graphics card would be for one that has 3 to 4gb of vram.

As a safety measure I usually only build pc's with a minimum of 16 gb ram now as I like to provision for the future as well as for current windows bloat... 8gb might be good enough for a lean / efficient console but I am pretty that the memory usage is going to be more on the equivalent pc version.

would going for a r7 260x and a 8350 be suitable?

yes it is 1080p

I wouldnt go below r9 270x and fx 8350, 260s are entering mainstream non gaming teritory, shop around for the lowest prices

(saphire is amd oem partner and vapor cards are really good)

would the sapphire r9 270x 4gb be a good card

Yeah, its a great card. but more expensive than the 2gb version and we're already going over your budget I think. Be careful to get the vapor x saphire as it cools better than a regular saphire.
Also think about getting one of these instead of the 120gb ssd. 120gb isnt really enough to put more than your OS and 2 games on in, but this can fit everything and its faster than a regular hdd

And dont forget the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 mobo :D
