With 14th gen intel processors around the corner I imagine retailers are starting to “fire sale” any remaining 12th gen stock they have.
Microcenter has what I believe is a good deal. Tell me your thoughts. I have a 11600k now and having the E cores would be nice for running background VM’s and containers and what not.
I do like my build as I have it now:
16000k, aorus master, 32GB trident Z, 3080 TI, 11TB flash storage. Two 10Gb nics (one via Tb3)
Now with this deal, a lot of what I have will be consolidated or rolled into the new build.
for those who don’t wish to click links:
12900k
z690 Aorus Elite
32Gb ripjaws ddr5 6000 $400
So a few questions, comments:
It does not appear I would be able to bifurcate the pcie 3.0 as they are running x4. Pretty big bummer.
Is the Single Core performance that much of a generational leap that would warrant upgrade?
The deal all in seems like it is a turn-key solution at a good price as opposed to trying to piecewise parts together waiting for an open box or for z790 bundles (if that were to be a thing with 14th gen rumored to work in z790 boards)
@wwed26 You said you want to run virtual machines, which operating software are you going to use as your host operating software? Windows or Linux? In my opinion, if your host software is going to be Linux. I would switch to AMD; here is why, E cores and P cores are a new technology that requires special instructions from the operating software to get the most proformas out of them. Windows has special instructions built into it, While as far as I know, Linux doesn’t have special instructions built into its kernel yet, or if it does, it is in very early stages. I looked into switching to Intel about a year and a half ago. While the special instructions were being worked on and were included in the Linux kernel, it would require me to run a beta kernel, and what I have heard, the performance sucked. I have not heard or read any articles saying anything that would indicate the situation had changed.
Using Linux, or more specifically Ubuntu Mate. Probably pin E cores to VMs and let the P cores do their thing.
I had not heard bad things about 12th gen and Ubuntu…… will take a look. For reasons my own and while I give each their own respect I have no plans for an AMD based computer in some time.
@wwed26 sorry for the late reply; I had a busy day today; I know you had some questions I didn’t answer in my last post. So you have picked Ubuntu Mate as your host operating software. Have you selected your virtualization software yet? Will you be passing your graphic card and a couple of USB controllers to your virtual machine? What are you going to use your virtual machine for? Answering my questions will help me in advising what virtualization software to use.
I don’t think 331/3 percent off their retail price is a crazy deal or a fire sale. It is a loss leader. What Microcenter is trying to do is get you into the store, and get you to purchase other items that are not on sale. Meaning when you leave Microcenter, you end up purchasing iitems you neveriintended. Is it a good deal? It depends on if the motherboard has all the features you want.
Looks like a good deal. Better than your current chip, and gets you up to DDR5.
I would not go for it, but is a good deal, if you had an older/worse CPU.
Perhaps just a beefier CPU off EBay, in the 11th gen might give you a bump? And at less cost. microcentre seem really good for deals, so I think there will be some in the future…
I did very well not to shill my beloved AMD…
Unless you have someone to pass on/sell the current system, and recover a bunch of the costs?
Prob add in a NIC for passthrough (and maybe the iGPU through) KVM/QEMU. Effectively I get cores and performance bump and much of what I have in my machine migrates over to the new one.
Want to consolidate my storage rig processes/tools into one machine. For certain reasons (mostly privacy and security) I’ve decided to block that machine from accessing the external internet, keeping it locally only. Naturally for services like airsonic that pull down podcasts for me that creates an issue.
Effectively I can pin e-cores to a VM(s) for airsonic, jellyfin, netxtcloud, etc. A different VM for select internet traffic thats not a day to day, and the dual boot windows drive I can passthrough which would eliminate the frequency I reboot while maintaining full P-core availability on Mate without any additional overhead. I also run mate VM(s) for testing updates, testing newer kernels etc.
In general its a performance bump while taking advantage of e-cores. The motherboard fits what I need less one NVME, but I can get around that rather easily.
Yes you did, thank you, its refreshing that people can generally respect peoples choice without starting a flame war . Everyone has their own experiences.
I will find a use for it. Most likely replace a secondary build that I am very unhappy with that I had to finesse together during COVID for an immediate need.
@wwed26 I didn’t mean to sound like a shill for Intel or start a flame war ; I use Intel myself. My laptoppp has an Intel processo in it. As soon as I get my eye surgery (so I can see what I am doing.) I will change my laptop’s OS . I think switching my laptop OS to Linux will be a challenge, but the computer is really old (got iit new on, September 16, 2013). I should be able to accomplish it.
As to your choices for Virtualisation software sinse you want to passthrough some items your best choice would be KVM (Kernel virulalation Machine), Vmware Esi or Proxmox.
Seems like a good deal. You should be able to put a 14th gen CPU on there down the line even. You mention single core performance, which is definitely improved if you don’t need AVX512, but especially the uplift in multicore will be large.
Maybe 32 GB of memory is a bit low if you want to run a lot of VMs. If you want to expand the memory, just keep in mind that with 4 dimms DDR5 probably won’t reach the same speeds.
When you take advantage of the Microcenter sale, talk to the sales manager and see if you can get him to take another 10 percent off for paying in cash; it never hurts to ask. A few years ago, I helped a friend equip his man cave. He saved 1,600 dollars by paying cash. Valid, you won’t purchase as much, but asking never hurts.
I was thinking the same, that will require some touch on my side, depending what I’m working on at the time too. For the three vms I’d run 24/7, W11 12GB, 2 and 2 or one with 4 depending on need. Leave 16GB for the host at a minimum. Or so are my initial thoughts.
Gonna put a pause on this decision until I get back from Japan because I am planning to go HAM before kids start popping out. Managing cash for a down payment on a house with a single income. I’m not going to send my wife to work for a computer.
I’m jumping on this. it’ll be a huge upgrade from my 9600K and 16gb ddr4. I just need a compatible cooler since I don’t think my existing Corsair aio will fit. My local microcenter is only an hour and a half away and I can borrow my pop’s Prius so it will probably cost me $10 in gas round trip lol ( My WRX will cost me way more in gas)
Look forward to my current 9600K, mobo, RAM, and AIO on the #community:buy-sale-trade soon!
for those looking to upgrade to that.
Decided if my trip costs comes in cheaper than expected I’m going to pull the trigger. I just gotta figure out if there is a way to move raid from one system to another.
