Is there a way to make installing a program default to another harddrive?

My nephew is getting a sweet laptop for his birthday because of me and some others.

It comes with and SSD and Harddrive in it, but he isnt exactly the smartest with using a computer yet.

Is there a way to make it so when something is being installed it defaults to wanting to stick it in the harddrive instead of the SSD?

The operating system will be Windows 10

Uhhhh...might be a registry setting. Or you can sym link program files and the x86 variant to folders on the other drive

I know you can change the install directory when you are doing the install wizard, but I personally don't know if you can or how you can change the DEFAULT directory.

Only some program installers allow you to change it. I know there are some that just use the c drive and that's it no question

In order to change the default installation directory, please change the following in the registry.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To change the registry, follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor by entering “Regedit” in the search All programs.
2. Locate the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
3. Right click on the value named ProgramFilesDir & change the default value C:\Program Files to the path you want to install all your programs in.
4. Click OK and Exit.

Windows, by default, will now install your programs in the new drive or path.

Hope this helps!
