Short version:
How can you tell if a Dimm is good for full Octal Channel/8 Dimm setup vs 4?
Long version:
I have an Asrock WRX80 Creator R2 with an AMD 5965WX.
Currently just has some gamer RAM in it, but I’m trying to figure out what proper RAM to put in, ideally: 8x32GB ECC Registered Samsung or Micron chips that run at 3200MHZ.
When I look up the QVL’d chips on that list, I can’t figure out why some would be good for 4 Dimms and others 8. I’d hate to buy 8 sticks just to realize later that they’re only good for 4 Dimms vs 8.
If anyone would be willing to shed a little clarifying light on that they would be my hero!
It may simply be the case that they only tested those configurations instead of 8 channel configuration for all DIMMs. Remember that the QVL only says what does work, not necessarily what doesn’t work.
The DIMMs themselves have no idea how many channels of interleave they’re running in, but fast timings on 2DPC can compromise signal integrity (which shouldn’t be an issue here as the board has 8 DIMM slots, each on it’s own channel).
