I’m considering getting an M4 Mac Mini because the new M6 Mini is too expensive, and I want to use the M4 Mini as a silent, low-power home lab server. The plan is to run Plex, set up Time Machine backups for the family, and possibly run a few Docker containers. For storage, I’ll use an external DAS.
I know the usual advice here is to build a cheap PC or buy a used OptiPlex, but the Mac Mini’s low power consumption and silent operation are very appealing to me. Plus, I’m already in the Apple ecosystem, so integration would be seamless.
Has anyone set up a home lab using this setup? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for—particularly regarding the reliability of external hard drives, macOS support for Docker, or Plex performance on Apple Silicon? I’m also curious to hear about any DAS enclosures that have performed well. Thanks in advance.
