I'm planning on building a pc and was in a dilemma between what CPU I should get for my build. I was planning on getting an AMD FX 8350 however people have started pointing me towards the Intel xeon E3-1230 V3. Apparently this preforms as well as an i7 4770 in games and the only difference between the two is the xeon doesn't have a igpu (a feature I wouldn't be using). If I chose the xeon I will be losing the ability to over clock but I'm not interested in over clocking.
I have a few questions about the Intel xeon E3-1230 V3
Is what I have been told true? (The part about it preforming the same as the 4770)
Will it be good for games like Titanfall, Next car game, DayZ, Arma 3 and Assassins creed black flag?
Should I get it for my gaming build? (I will be getting an Asus r9 270x GPU)
Yes it is the same as the 4770, just slightly lower clock speed. It should be good for those games. No, you shouldn't get it with that build since you're only getting a 270x. Invest a bit more into the graphics card and get something like an i5 4670 and R9 280 or 280x. It's on socket 1150, which after the haswell refresh there will probably only be one more series of CPUs for that socket (Broadwell, I believe). In most games the Xeon would perform about the same as the i5, so I'd most likely only get the Xeon if you need it for activities such as rendering or editing that will benefit from the hyperthreading.
the xeon E3-1230V3 is indeed basicly a i7-4770 without the igpu. if i look at the games you play ARMA DayZ, then its better to go intel in the first place, so in my opinnion the intel Xeon would be a good choice. However an i5-4570 or 4670, is also not a bad choice. But the xeon has HT, not realy interessting for gaming now, but in the future maybe.. ☺
please don't buy a r9 270x. it is just a r9 270 with an x. the r9 270 is cheaper and has a slightly lower clockspeed but i got my r9 270 to 1200mhz which is higher than some r9 270x.
I will probably go with this CPU dispute what Morgoth780 is saying. The way I see the situation is if I get a good CPU and a decent GPU now I can easily upgrade the GPU after a while, and the r9 270x isn't a bad GPU for the money. It will be able to play everything I want at 1080p. MisteryAgnel makes a good point about the hyper threading. Games dont use it now but they might in the future.
I would go with whatever is cheaper. If the i5 is cheaper, that would be my choice. You could either spend or save the price difference. No point purchasing a CPU that you might not utilise fully. A higher performing GPU is always worth considering.
