Hi,
I recently sold my monitor so im looking to buy a new one. Since I already have a decent PC im thinking to buy a gaming monitor that has a good refresh rate, response time and adjustability. Ive been looking into the Asus and Benq that offer 144hz /1ms response time.

but these are very expensive in my country (Asus is 410 USD and Benq almost 500 USD) so I don't know if they are worth the price , because in my case I have a 7970 GPU and those monitors may require a more powerful GPU to push more than 60 FPS. On my system i think I can barely push beyond that framerate on a few triple A games.
So there's also the possibbility to buy an IPS monitor with low response time, as you may know they may have better colours but they also have ghosting and lag while gaming .

On the other hand TN panels don't have the latter issues, but reviews say they have washed out colors, although ive read that this could be fixed by tweaking them on the monitor settings.

Well, i only have these 3 options available, ranging from affordable to delirious price. I may have the budget to spend 500 dollars but I think its too much, considering i could be spending the extra cash on a new pc part instead, don't you think?.
I dont play much FPS games, i mostly play competetive RTS or 3rd Person action games, some solo RPGs too. My PC rig is from last year but it still can handle most of these demanding titles i throw at it. Here is my Rig: http://imgur.com/a/u4pg2#0
I would like to know your comments and view on this, what would you do if you were me? Its a difficult choice, if it wasnt for the damn taxes...
I look forward to hearing from you
There is of course the option of reducing settings so that you can push 144hz.
I couldn't comment on whether 144hz is worth it, as I don't have one. But based off the fact that you don't play FPS I would think it wouldn't be worth it. But I'm not entirely certain that IPS would be better if motion blur would be a big problem in RTS games.
Can you drive your monitor at that rate, probably not. Also do you want to give up colour reproduction for a washed out TN panel with bad viewing angles, that somehow costs more? I would just get a 2560x1440 korean panel, infact I plan on doing so next graphics card update.
If you have the hardware to drive it (a 7970 should drive 120Hz at 1080p reasonably well in most games) and you don't mind the color issues of a TN panel, then yes they are worth it. 144Hz and 1ms GTG are the only reason why anybody would ever consider getting a TN panel in this day and age. But if color accuracy is a big thing for you just get an IPS, no point in getting a TN if you need color accuracy
I forgot to mention that the Asus monitor has the Gsync upgrade option available and that would make it a bit more future proof if I were to buy this upgrade kit later. I dont know if Gsync works with AMD Video Cards, if it doesn't then I'd have to buy a new Nvdia card and that's inconvenient. Benq has PWM in it so it's flicker free from the get go and it also has a newer technology to reduce blur called ULMB compared to Asus that uses Lightboost. But if you add this Gsync to the latter, then it would be even better than the first one.
What you say about higher res is more important than motion is really tricky. I wouldnt mind that much for a huge resolution, 1440p wouldnt be bad but 1080 is enough for me right now.
I will have to look into wether i'll be able to push more than 60 fps without reducing the settings too much. But even if i cant get the most out of the 144hz i might do it later when i buy another Video Card or by getting this Gsync upgrade. What do you think? The IPS doesnt look so bad but I worry about the ghosting and I have no way to know that for sure unless i test it myself so its risky.
Thanks for your help
G-Sync does NOT work with AMD cards, if you want to use G-Sync you will need an Nvidia GPU. There is Free-sync coming in the future if you are willing to wait til next year. But your 7970 will not be able to use G-Sync
Monitors with higher refresh rates are more preferred by FPS gamers since the response times helps them see individual objects on screen more quickly due to faster movement of pixels. I highly recommend you buy an IPS panel or something better with color accuracy because it better suits games like RTS and Third person shooters. I currently own a DELL U2412M/HM 1200p IPS monitor and it's very suitable for RTS and TPS games - it even makes things look more appealing to the eye despite the refresh rate being 60hz only. Don't worry about the response times, input lag and refresh rates. Anything around 8ms and 60hz as long it's an IPS panel makes the game very immersive. If you're looking for an excellent 1080p monitor, I extremely recommend the DELL U2312HM.
Unless you play CounterStrike, Quake, or another fast paced, precision demanding, competitive FPS than I would not recommend it. Just get a nice IPS panel.
I don't think the majority of the current graphics cards will support Freesync/Adaptive Sync. I believe the R9 290, 290X, 295x2, and 285 are the only ones with the support.
+1
For MLG competing twitch shooters or for 3D (because that requires at least 100 Hz refresh rate also).
For anything else, a nice IPS or VA panel is a much better choice.
nVidia GSync is a stillborn freak child of a greedy company. FreeSync is an open standard. Open standards are there to prevent people from getting fucked sideways by greedy companies.
I would not recommend buying a 144 Hz monitor. For the extra price you could get a really nice looking IPS panel, which looks much better than a TN monitor. Also you would need a pretty beefy GPU to run games at 144 Hz, or you need to turn down the setting, which makes the game look even worse. So in short I would buy a 60 Hz IPS or VA panel and have a better looking and more emersive game at 60 FPS.
I have been owning a 144Hz Asus VG248QE and i REALLY want to switch to IPS. The colours are awful. Go for the IPS unless you are into competetive gaming. Go get a X-Star from dream-seller.
Well, only if you have like 2 or 3 grand worth of GPU power.
Also 144Hz refresh panels are TN, and TN is shit. So I would say no.
