Actually I found a solution for this. What I needed was the firmware from this Reddit post:
Once I downloaded ctefx-desktop.bin and dropped in /lib/firmware, then rebooted I had audio, even from the rear analog ports.
There is a fly in the ointment: sometimes the audio driver crashes necessitating a reboot. The system doesn’t lock up, it just loses audio. I haven’t fully investigated this…
