Greetings everyone!

First off, I’m so proud of my self. I built an entire computer, got it to post, installed Ubuntu, I installed Ollama and started running llm models, I installed ComfyUI and began running WAN2.2!
But now…

Ohhhhh Mother &&&&er! After all of that I have tried to network this think to my Mac Studio M1, and things are getting ready to go through the window.

I have installed the Windows App (formerly Remote Desktop) on my Mac, I have setup XRDP on the Linux Machine. I have set static IP address. All the services are running however I keep getting the following error:

We couldn’t connect to the remote PC. Make sure the PC is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

Error code: 0x204"

It worked ONE TIME. The one time was after I took it to a computer shop, explained what I was doing, left it over night, Brough it back home, let the tech remote in and It worked Flawlessly. I was able to get in via XRDP and run a command line (though I seamed to be in a weird account) and I can login with another window in the Windows App that shows me the Ubuntu Desktop GUI. Obviously Networking is not my thing. Then I shutdown the computer tried again, worked great. Turned off the computer a few days ago and I am back to the error again.

Some other info, The Mac Studio M1 is connected to the internet via WiFi. The Ubuntu Machine is connected to the internet via WiFi. The computers are connected by a direct ethernet cable. This is not the way I wanted to do this.

The goal is simple. I want to sit at my Mac, with one monitor, mouse, and one keyboard. I want to open up a window, and be able to use my local LLM/AI machine. I want to be able to copy and paste text and images between windows (computer) I want to set this up once and forget about it for as long as possible. I am not concerned with “security” rite now. I built an online LLM because I don’t want my original work being spit out on other people’s computers but for now I don’t care who is looking at what I"m doing. I need to get it to work, to learn it before client security is an issue.

Is the xrdp service enabled and running?

try systemctl status xrdp on the ubuntu machine

also what do you get for ip a

According to this;

You have either;

  1. not enabled RDP (some distros do not autorun the command by default due to security considerations)
  2. Forgot to give the proper IP or NF Tables permissions (you must explicitly enable the firewall so this is unlikely)
  3. Badly configured DNS (not applicable here since static IPs)
  4. Corrupted MacOS files in the RDP folder (unlikely)
  5. The built in MacOS firewall is not allowing traffic on the designated port (default 3389)

So, most likely causes are 1 and 5. For 1, see adubs answer.

Can suggest this is very unlikely, macOS firewall by default permits all outbound traffic.
