i3 2100 vs 4100/4170

I am a former colsole gamer (PS3). You have shown me the light! I was wounder witch on of the CPU's in the title would be better. I would game on the system but am also a freshman in college (computer science major) so I going use it for school stuff. Thanks in advance!

FX-4170. If youd like, i can set up a parts list for you in a few hours? Just throw me a budget youre trying to achieve and i can work from there.

Also, are you using a keyboard/mouse/monitor you already own? That will give you extra overhead for the computer overall.

Well there is a better upgrade path with the i3 2100 as of now, since Intel is the leading platform. Though AMD is soon coming out with the new Vishera chips which apparently should kick ass.

The FX-4's aren't that good. If I were you I would pick up a X4 960T instead, as that's what I've done myself. You have a chance of unlocking it to an X6, + it's just all around better CPU than the FX-4 series. Can overclock it to 4Ghz easily and have a great gaming/productive CPU at a bargain price.

If not, X4 965 is still better than a FX quad core.

about 650 dollars. I have a an old mouse and Keyboard (can upgrade later) and a 1600x900 monitor.

Assuming you have a spare computer to rip a storage drive out of, here's what i set up for you

Thanks for the help. I was considering a Llano chip but was not sure about how powerful they were in terms of of core proformance.

No problem, if you have any issues or questions, dont hesitate to ask. ;)

Well fx 6100 prices dropped alot i got one and i love it got it oc to 4.5ghz air easily 8 gigs ram and a gtx560ti runs everything max at 1080p.

I would cut case budget and use a bigger ssd. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227729

Only problem now is that FM1 sockets will not have anymore CPUs/APUs added to it. He should go for a FM2 mobo right now cuz that is still being used for future CPUs.
