I wonder if this is for acoustic reasons? (crashed car)

Hey all,

Walking passed a crash car the other day, Just a curiosity, is the white stuff acoustic insulation?

Cheap filler for 20mph bumpers.

My wifes Ford Escape has a similar substance, but I’m 99% sure its purpose is to flake into pieces and make a big mess any time you want to work on the car

My pure guess is cheap repair work from someone, who isn’t a professional and just improvises or something…

Yes. It’s to absorb some of the road noise.

If you look up your own car and add “road noise insulation” to the search, you’ll (eventually) find the type and places where your car has noise insulation foam/pads.

It’s part of the bumper. Styrofoam has significant compressive strength when you protect it from bending or puncture. I see it all the time at the junkyard. It sits between the plastic bumper skin and the steel reinforcement. They also use it in concrete walls and foundations for insulation without a massive loss of strength. An image search for Styrofoam bumper brings up plenty of pictures.
