I just discovered LSFG. What a cool piece of software

Really that’s it. Being able to use my old 1070 to upscale and generate frames for a game rendered by my less old 2080ti feels cool to me the same way that looking-glass feels cool.

Maybe I’ll have a different opinion after I use it for a while longer, but for the moment it feels like magic.

I wonder how much more cool software is out there that I would love but just haven’t ever heard of.

It’s been interesting to weigh the value of outsourcing upscaling & frame generation to a separate GPU vs using the native tools that so many modern PC games include.

LS seems like it will be most valuable when the included tools in a game aren’t getting it done, especially as my PC gets older and is less and less capable of keeping up. For the moment it’s most useful to me for scaling up older games that aren’t able to scale UI elements up sufficiently for a 4k display.

It’s also fun to crank things way up and laugh at the impressive AI artifacts that result.

Oh so it first captures and then upscales the image? This must be adding a lot of latency plus upscaling processing.

The modern environment has games, Windows locked down so much that you cannot but follow the standardized API methods. Drivers have the advantage of being able to operate at various levels in the stack while independent developers are barred from entering this playground. Even AMD had been unjustly bashed for causing false-positives in CSGO/CS2 Valve Anti-Cheat when they tried to integrate AntiLag themselves.

Integer Scaling / Nearest Neighbor

The AMD Windows driver has been supporting this for years… if you can fight with the settings to get it to work.

For my use, where I ended up was that this is a backup option if the upscaling / frame generation integrated into the game itself isn’t getting it done.

It’s been a convenient way to get older games up to 4k resolution WITH a comfortably scaled up in game UI.
