I am putting together my new gaming computer tomorrow - what software should I install?

Hello - over the past 2 months, I have been amassing parts and finally got the last part from Newegg as a Christmas gift today. The parts are as follows:

  CPU: Intel i7 3770k

  Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Formula

  Graphics Card: EVGA gtx 680 FTW+ 4GB

  RAM: G.SKILL Trident X @ 2400mHz

CPU cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE - black version

  Power Suppkly: Corsair HX850 - 80+ Gold

Storage - boot and essentials: Corsair Force 120GB SSD SATA III

  Storage - main/bulk: Seagate Constellation 2TB @ 7200rpm

  Optical Drive: LG BluRay Reader/Writer

Case: Fractal Design Define XL - Titanium Grey

  Monitor: ASUS 24" LED 1080p

Mouse: Logitech g600 MMO mouse - black

Keyboard: Rosewill 9100 - Cherry MX Blue

Mousepad: Xtrac Ripper XXL - it's 3 feet wide and 18" long - buy one now

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

So, this is a high quality gaming machine. I will be getting Steam, Skype, Mozilla, Chrome, Blender, and Visual Studio C++, but other than my usual programs, what should I get? I want to get into film and audio editing, especially chiptune (8 bit) music. Freeware would be nice, and obviosuly I can't get any Autodesk or Adobe software right now. I will be gaming a lot, and hope to get into composition, both chiptune and orchestral/symphonic, and may possibly start a Youtube series for it. Any suggestions are welcome. Also, any Windows 7 themes that are nice would be useful. Thanks for the feedback you can provide - I will post a buildlog and final product tomorrow, as well as my benchmarks, etc.

Cheers!

audacity is a audio editor, and its also free. Game booster 3 is also nice because it closes programs that run in the background to optimize performance.

For windows/desktop related things i recomend rainmeter http://rainmeter.net/cms/ and rocketdock http://rocketdock.com/ thats ust a start, and good music creation programs are fruityloops studio, ablton, and reason http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/, other than that stuff like CCleaner is always nice to keep your pc nice and clean, along with tuneup utilitys. Also for video editting, i would start with things like adobe after effects, sony vegas 11 and Cinema 4D. Thats all i can think of now, but ill let you know of some others...

  • RocketDock
  • Notepad++
  • SpeQ
  • ImDisk (open source ramdisk)
  • Chromium
  • HWmonitor + GPU-Z + CPU-Z
  • Xfire
  • Thunderbird
  • LibreOffice or OpenOffice
  • Lightworks (professional level video editor and its open source)
  • Winrar
  • Media Player Classic + K-Lite codec pack
  • Picasa
  • Gimp
  • Dropbox
  • Pidgin
  • Hot Keyboard Pro (macros and rebindign keys)

http://filehippo.com is a good place to find a lot of free software.

Gamebooster is bs if I'm honest.

actually joonikko, i somewhat agree with you. I just loaded it on my desktop and it really didn't do a thing, but if i run it on my netbook it makes a huge difference. It may just help with computers with lesser ram.
