Hynix P31 vs P41 on laptop

Hi,

Currently the 2To Hynix P41 Gen4 costs 99€ in my country and 89€ for the Gen3 P31, the difference in price is insignificant. I’m planning to use it on a laptop and I’m mostly concerned about the power consumption. I’ve read that Gen4 SSDs consume more power than Gen3 even on idle, unfortunately I can’t find a good comparison test. I’m using my laptop for dev stuff (vscode, browser, Visualization…) I’m willing to trade a bit of battery consumption for better random IO but I’m not sure how much this P41 will consume power compared to P31.

Heat is actually more of a concern that anything else especially in a laptop, the P41 reportedly runs hot so you probably want to take that into account. SK hynix Platinum P41 SSD Review: The Best Around (Updated) | Tom's Hardware (at the end)

The laptop has a heat sink and thermal pad, I don’t that heat will be an issue, I also rarely place it on my lap.

Most gen4 run hotter than gen3 because they are moving more data, and thus using more power. Lower power would generally be gen3. Can you find the specifications for each drive, they usually have max and idle power. As for testing, unless you can isolate the device from the system and measure independently I don’t see how you are going to be able to guess at the power consumption, likely to be hidden in the noise of the cpu, gpu, ram, and other system devices.
