How viable would it be to add online gameplay to older games?

How viable is it to make older games have some online multiplayer capability? Games like double dash, budokai 3, the older mario parties and so on.

So aside from multiple people remote desktopping to a single PC and doing it that way, would there any other solution for the people playing to receive visuals and be able to place inputs with minimal lag?

Would this be something that has to be built into emulators?

I don't know too much about networking and programming.

There are plugins for PSX and N64 emulators to do this sort of thing iirc, so I don't see why you couldn't do the same for gamecube and others.

I believe it was something to do with the killara client or something...

Yeah here it is: http://www.kaillera.com/

There goes that word again lol. Anyway, for fighters I know there's something called FightCade which allows you to play old fighting games, but not all of them.
