How to install Windows

So let me get this straight. In order to install Windows, I have to:

  1. Go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
  2. Create installation media
  3. Select the proper edition of Windows
  4. Download all the files to a USB/DVD
  5. Insert USB/DVD to my new PC
  6. Enter authentic product key
  7. Install windows

Is that the gist of it or am I missing something?

Well depending on the version, you will need to configure partitioning and whatnot. Be sure to unplug all drives except the one that you're going to install windows on (and dvd drive if that's what you're using to install with). Be sure to back up everything before installing, unless you don't care about the old stuff.

Best of luck!

Also, you're going to be spending a bit of time with windows update after doing a fresh install. Just be aware of that.

you will not need to configure partitioning, unless you have multiple drives and you want to do it manually. Otherwise windows does this automatically.

Windows will also throw all the old files on the system in a "windows.old" folder in the C drive. But it is still recommended to back up your data.

Use a tool like magical jelly bean to get your product key if you don't have it handy. Also use a tool like Rufus to create a bootable flash drive with your windows iso. Using a usb will be magnitudes faster than a cd.

I have a brand new hard drive. I dont have to back anything up do I?

So have plenty of coffee on hand!!! ;O)

A brand new hard drive as your boot drive? Then no, you don't have to backup anything. The drive will be empty.

The hands down easiest way to install windows is to

  1. Obtain a legal copy of Windows
  2. Put Disk/media in your pc
  3. Remove media, slap yourself, and throw it away
  4. Install Linux distro of your choice.
  5. Enjoy your pc
