How to best install RAM from different vendors?

Greetings everyone,

I’ve got my old PC setup as a server with Proxmox to play around with and the 16GB (2x8) feel a bit limiting since I’ve got more and more docker containers running.
Now I’m thinking about getting additional 2x8GB to increase my options. Speed is not really important in my case, although all of them will be 3200MHz.

So my question is:
How would you recommend me to install them, since the other 2 will be from a different vendor?

Option 1:
Channel 1 = Vendor1 + Vendor2
Channel 2 = Vendor1 + Vendor2

Option 2:
Channel 1 = Vendor1 + Vendor1
Channel 2 = Vendor2 + Vendor2

Does it even make any difference? Did anyone ever look into it?
I’m just curious.

As long as the timings are the same (RAS, CAS and latency) there’s no difference or limiting factors. If the timings differ, then the slowest set will determine performance of all RAM sticks.

Option 2:

If you’re a perfectionist…

In your case (just for your case), I would go with Option 2 which likely have a little bit better performance, compatibility & etc.
