How the hell can you play games on the PC? (rant)

Yeah it ran fine on my system too, and I quite liked it, except for the linearity of course. But it's a 60 EUR one-time-play game, it's not like it was really worth the hype all things considered.

Also, a lot of content from the game was removed for the German version, and although I didn't buy a German version, but bought a French version, I did have to bypass the DRM phone home version in Germany, or I couldn't play it. I find the mere concept of that scandalous. It's just a video game, it's not an illegal firearm! DRM is a mechanism of criminalization, and I think it's very dangerous.

CS:Go is a different engine than source and you can only play the game when steam is in beta mode

Also Valve works on Valve time, give em time they are super slow on stuff

I get that, but for a two year old port, they're not inspiring confidence. They keep on inflating the CS:GO user base, now there's almost 4 million monthly users, and the quality of the game is really suffering from that. Add the horrendous linux port, even in beta, and the bunch of problems CS:GO for Windows has had lately with stutters and stuff (and still has, there are still occasional stutters on less powerful hardware), and it's clear that they don't really care about PC gaming or showing off the benefit and e-sports potential of PC gaming. They're pretty much breaking the game more than two years after it was released, and after they forced the entire esports scene to migrate from CS1.6 to CS:GO.

I don't like when things crash, but I really enjoy fixing them and knowing the reasons behind the problem. Just gaining knowledge and learning different ways to do things, that is what I like.

But if my phone had those kind of issues I would be pissed, Cyanogenmod is a heaping pile of shit in my eyes, never had any version of it that actually worked. Now I am using a very heavily customised version of OMNI ROM and it is rock solid. PC is not a critical thing for me so if it crashes I can fix it and thats fine, but I need my phone to be operational at all times, even with that I am usually editing something on my phone just to see what happens.

Far Cry 3 crashed every fucking time I tried to play it...however, I only payed about £3.50 for it so I can't really feel too butthurt about it.

Dark Souls was a game I adored on the console, but stopped playing after about half an hour on PC. GFWL + the headache of navigating the piss-poorly-ported menu system made me turn it off.

Fallout 3 was another console favourite, and though I'm yet to play it on PC, I hear it's pretty tricky to get it running smoothly.

Aside from those games, I'm really glad I switched and don't think I could ever go back. I miss playing with my IRL friends, but even that's not enough to tempt me to go back. I get the odd crash or error from time to time, but the majority of games I play run fine. I do play a lot of indies though, so it's not like I'm pushing my system to the limit for hours on end. But modded Skyrim, Tomb Raider, Brothers and other such pretty games have never given me any real headaches. I think you're probably just playing one crappy port too many, which unfortunately seems to make up a good chunk of the AAA titles.

Meh , you probably have a bad gpu or something , gta iv and others run perfectly , just download from steam and play with 3D , or 120 hz while being on skype .

Try to solve your problems ?

The only problematic game for me is watchdogs with the graphical mod ...

One thing I have found if you want to maximize reliability and minimize down time is to not mess with things. Don't try to push overclocks or run extra software that tweaks your hardware. Just buy components you know will be [more or less] reliable, install/assemble them and run them as-is.

By nature, I am a curious tinkerer. I like to "mess with things" and "see what it can do". The down side to this is poor stability and other possible issues. I spend a lot of time benchmarking and seeing how well a game runs vs. actually playing the game. Part of me enjoys that aspect and it's a bit of a balance to make sure I don't mess with things so much that I can't run games reliably.

I don't know what the problems you've been experiencing are related to, but I can honestly say I haven't had anywhere near that much trouble. 99% of the games I've run, have run flawlessly. AC Black Flag is the only game I cannot get to run properly/smoothly and blame Ubisoft for that.

First things first, check your drivers and make sure they're up to date and properly installed.

There are easily installed fixes for Dark Souls (1) that makes the menu WAY better and also upgrades the textures etc.

Google DSfix.

I like stressing the limits of what the hardware I use is capable of

I will always complain that I don't have enough ram / processor because as soon as I get more ram / better processor i tend to do more with it that just makes it feel as slow as what it did before :D

That's what being part of the pc master race gets you.

Never being content or happy with what you have and everything just becomes a numbers game.

Sort of related to your topic.. but its about where gaming is heading in general.

My only big complaint is how everything is shifting towards online distribution.. and publishers don't even blink at giving you 50gb digital downloads... it's sad really as I think its too soon for this sort of thing.

The infrastructure just isnt there yet (e.g cheap / fast internet) and sure as hell your ISP is going to be at odds with this sort of thing.

I am really surprised that your having all of these issues with those games except for Doom since I never played Doom. Assetto Corsa loads just fine with my Logitech G27 but probably because I dont have it plugged in all the time and the game tens to studder A LOT and I have no idea why it does that. Sleeping Dogs worked fine for me with the occasional frame dips. MW2 well i'm just really shocked at that. GTA IV was a crappy port at launch but idk how good it has gotten over the years.

Wrong, A good motherboard will perform better, cause less crashes and just be more stable under load. the reason why its called a Work Station motherboard. My previous motherboard was an intel extreme board. That thing had hissy fits left and right. I build computer for people and I can tell when I get a bad board. i wont touch z97m, boards for the share fact that they are not stable. I have had a lot of "cheap" boards stability problems. Not to mention the amount of OEM boards which are just down right CRAP. Im looking at you HP, Dell and Acer. Too many people buy cheap crap and wonder why their rig blue screens or artifacts or whatnot. There is a reason why I waited an extra month before buying my GPU so I could spend more on my Mobo. So it would be rock solid. You get what you pay for.

I will share with you the funniest thing that happened to me and perhaps the fun that is PC gaming.

I year or so I built a rig with a 3590k and gtx680 ready to rock and roll and play all the goodies - except it didn't want to. It got to the point where I was doing satanic rituals to get it to play anything. Then low and behold it started to be ok and I swear I didn't change a thing (or I may find out I owe my soul to people haha) but still the odd problem.

Now to make it even funnier - all my games are stored on a 2tb HDD, while steam is installed with my OS on an SSD. I recently build a new computer for lanning with a gtx980 and 4790k (tad overkill I know :P) and I thought I would save some dosh and just move my 2tb HDD with my games onto the new rig, but got a new SSD and fresh installed my OS and steam.

Now at this point you (and I) would be thinking, OK knowing what happened last time I am in for a Megatron worth of problems - but no, not a single issue.

In conclusion, sometimes pc gaming is like head-butting a brick wall and then sometimes it is cake :)

take the good with the bad because at the end of the day unlike consoles (which I have an Xbone) I actually feel like it is MINE, not Microsoft's, EA's or whoever. I built it with my own hands, fixed its issues when something went wrong, changed what I didn't like and even modded my case to suit me.

Show me a console owner who can attest to the same.

Doom? How? It was made for the pc, what are you trying to play the old dos version in modern windows without using dosbox? GZdoom never has given me a problem. Heck the only game I have really had problems with is doom 3 original and thats just because I have an amd gpu, all other id games(doom or not) run fine for me. Only game I've had with crashing problems are skyrim(because its not stable to begin with and mods and to that) and borderlands 2 when sometimes internet lag would make it crash.

Sure every now and again I get problem with a 10 year old game on modern windows or when I mess up installing a mod but beyond that I don't have problems really. It sounds almost like you may have a hardware problem or a really nasty piece of malware.

I've seen people with gcn run it just fine. : /

It's funny, I still have my 360 from back in '08 and I only had to send it back once for a faulty GPU, it red ringed with one out of four rings once but I fixed it by unplugging it. But on PC i've sent back at least 2 faulty GPUs, one of which caught fire.

Try Counter Strike. (Global Offensive) - Although Source and GO have a very steep learning curve, they're well optimised. Source is the best though, 500 fps ez pz.

Caught fire ????

you seem to have really bad luck , I've had 16 gpu's , new and second hand , and only one was ever broke , a second hand mining card .

Is there a link to a post with pics ?

mm

A link to what haha?

Have you heard of google?

Any problems I ever have with a PC game, yes there are often a few glitches here and there, just look up the problem and it usually takes 5 mins to find a solution. Swearing and smacking the screen don't really work (no offence but that is the impression you give of problem solving). I try to keep my cool and not get frustrated at rants like this but I really don't understand why you could denounce PC gaming because of its lack of usability, if you want to mong out and be limited to what console developers let you do go do that. Otherwise change your diaper and embrace in the freedom PC gives you.

Are you playing the legit version of the pc games or something you got from a torrent site??? I been a pc gamer for sometime, Played the latest greatest titles and I am only using a 660ti card with a AMD 8350. Games run fine, Look great. No glitching, runs smooth.

Just seems odd your having issues with your games. IMHO, It has to be hardware, or maybe the games not being legit.  Thats my 2 cents.
