How involved is building custom Flight Sim peripherals?

My son is very into MS Flight Sim, and he’s also into building projects with small boards like the Raspberry Pi.

I’m curious how involved it is to build custom peripherals, specifically those that have a USB output?

AS someone with a day job of flying planes, and who has been interested in flying since I was ~5, I have been around the flight sim world for a very long time. I have seen people do this. If you google I am confident you will see long and involved threads where the builder goes into great detail about how they managed to build whatever widget they wanted for their flight sim. There are even cottage industries that sell on Etsy, for example, home made and self developed, flight sim hardware.

I don’t want to dissuade your son, as it was my interest in flying and adults that enabled my youthful interests that got me where I am now, and with all the experiences I have had in aviation.
