How do I reset my Windows 11 password without logging in?

My spare laptop mainly for backup. Unfortunately,I forgot the Windows 11 password after recent change. It is a local admin account.

Is it possible to reset Windows 11 password without logging in and keep my files and apps? Never did this before and hope someone points me the right direction.

Did you make a password reset disk in advance? If yes, you can use it to reset Windows 11 password without losing any data.

There are many documented ways to open a cmd with System permissions on the logon screen. Many include the utilman.exe but I’m not sure if this is still vaiable on the current w11 release.

Windows has a built-in administrator account that is disabled by default. You can activate it from the recovery environment and use it to reset Windows 11 password.
