Horizontal UPS options. I might need to return this one

So, I’m about to build my new Unraid server and one of the parts I picked up for it is a Tripp-Lite UPS. it’s the SMX1500. There were two key factors for what I was looking for. 1) Unraid would be able to communicate with it, so if the power went out the server would gracefully shut down. 2) It needed to be horizontally-oriented.

Here is where its currently sitting.

As you can see it’s on the 2nd shelf and fits perfectly. But wow is it loud. Does anyone have any recommendations on other reasonably priced UPS models that sit horizontally? I don’t really have any other place to put it, the server will be sitting on the shelf directly below it. I don’t want it on the floor taking up any more space. Worst case scenario I’m going to return this and grab one of the vertical APC units.

I’m surprised to hear you say that the UPS is loud… Can you describe what you’re hearing? Is it an electrical whine? Is it when the unit kicks in with a loud ping type noise? Is it the beeping alarm when power goes out?

Same question as @Whizdumb … I have two of these UPS on my home gaming machine and network equipment, they don’t make any noise.

At the office I have a Tripplite 3000va model under my desk, it does have a fan noise to it, but I wouldn’t call it loud.

I actually already packed it up and sent it back, if I had not, I should captured some audio. The sound is literally just a loud constant fan, wind sound. The unit and server will be sitting in my the middle of home. My wifes piano, office, etc. The constant wind sound was driving me nuts.

I know the units not really a consumer model and most people I’ve seen using has been in a server rack. So its not really near the common areas of the house.

I’m making some changes and going with a more consumer model from APC. APC UPS 1350VA Sine Wave UPS

Line interactive UPS should not be loud, and as far as I can tell this is one.
IIRC with line interactive kind inverter only comes on when input power is outside some specified range and with online double conversion UPS inverter is always on so those need constant cooling and are typically much louder.

If your line interactive is loud could be you have stability issues in the power grid, or just maybe some setting in how the UPS is operating.

On second thought, maybe at 900W it does need to run the fan constantly. Maybe you could split the load between two lower power units if your server is not a huge power hungry monster.
