I just received my desktop from storage (had it shipped to where I am). It is currently running Windows 10 Home, version 10240. I also replaced my GTX 560 Ti with the GTX 1070, along with replacing my 8GB of RAM with 16GB of the exact same brand and model.
As far as I know, it looks like my system is not recognizing the 1070 (says that the graphics driver is MS Basic Display Driver). From my understanding, I need to update my Windows to 1607 (the Anniversary Edition). However, I've tried doing a direct exe download as well as the Media Creation Tool and both time the installation gets stuck at 23%, and I'm unable to do anything with my 1070.
Does anyone know what I need to do? I am at a loss and extremely frustrated.
You're downloading the driver from Nvidia right?... Windows doesn't handle the graphics driver...
Yeah. So drivers 368.xx and 374.xx are the two most recent GTX 10 series graphics drivers. Right now, my 1070 is plugged in but it's running off of Microsoft Basic Display Driver (while I'm able to web browse and the like, it completely crashed trying to run the Heaven 4.0 benchmark).
When I try to install any GTX 10 series associated driver, it fails and tells me that my Windows version is not Compatible. After looking around online, I learned that my version of Windows, Home 10240, needs to be updated to at least 1507 (the Preview build of the Anniversary Update) but ideally to 1607 (the Anniversary Update).
However, for whatever reason, the 1607 update does not automatically appear in the Windows Update tool and when I Check for Updates it does not show up. I tried downloading the exe from the MS website and I've also tried downloading it using the Media Creation Tool, and both times the installation froze my system at 23%.
So to sum it up: I need to update my Windows to version 1607 (aka Redstone aka Anniversary Update) in order to actually use my new GTX 1070, but I am completely unable to install said Windows update.
Do you know what the make/model of your motherboard is? If not, grab Speccy (quick/simple/complete system information from the makers of CCleaner).
https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/portable/
Yeah here's the rest of my PC:
CPU: i5-3570k at stock
GPU: 1070 FTW
Storage: 256GB Samsung SSD, 1TB HDD for bulk storage
Memory: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport
MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V Pro
I actually just downloaded the latest chipset and USB drivers from the ASUS driver webpage though I don't know if that has made any difference since I didn't have the chance to try to download the update again. My gut says it won't change anything though.
if you still have your old gpu install that and see if it will allow you to update to the anniversary update or use integrated graphics then install your 1070 and install the drivers for it
Did you make sure you grabbed the correct build? (Most likely 64 bit) sorry if I'm being really basic but more often than not the problem is some stupid little thing.
Yeah it was the 64 bit version.
I'll have to wait until I'm home later to try out some stuff but this is my game plan for now:
Create a Windows installation DVD using Media Creation Tool
See if Upgrade this PC and Keep my Files work using the DVD
If not, see if using the old GPU and then doing the above step will work
Last resort: do a complete clean install
I'm just really hesitant to do a clean install because this is a PC that I use for school as well, and there are a few years worth of stuff that is on there and I know that I don't remember all of it. I also have Steam on my SSD (the OS/main app drive) and it is linked through steamapps to my HDD...it's just a lot of hassle to do during the week and all I want is to get set up so I can play Mankind Divided.
I was sort of expecting other users here to maybe have a similar problem since it's relatively well-known and prevalent online, but maybe this particular forum section doesn't see that much traffic.
You could try downloading and using display driver uninstaller and use it to remove all Nvidia drivers (there will still be remnants from before even if you uninstalled them) do the same for AMD too if you've ever had an AMD card in the system.
Reason I asked about the motherboard is that some motherboards (if they ship with their very oldest BIOS revisions) need an update to detect some newer graphics cards. That was the case with my Z77 ASRock motherboard and a GTX 660 Ti.
My current ASUS P8Z77-I/WD Deluxe didn't need a BIOS update to detect my GTX 1070 (also an EVGA FTW -- ##RGBAllTheThings), but I bought it recently and it came with a newer BIOS (read: UEFI) revision. That's probably why.
FWIW the ASRock motherboard was replaced because the PCIe slot died. Is that irony? :P
Edit: Just re-read your OP and I see that you're getting into Windows (with the display cable connected to the GTX 1070, yes?) ... now I'm curious if it shows up as your GPU in Speccy. If it does, try installing GeForce Experience (which would also detect it) and see if it suggests anything or just attempts to install the latest GeForce driver.
Yeah so Geforce Exp recognizes that I need to download the 374 graphics driver but it does not recognize anything else: My Games, My Rig, none of it. My MOBO BIOS is from 2012 but I've never had a problem with it so I'm hesitant to download the latest version they have (from 2013). I did download the latest USB and Intel Chipset drivers though. I can't tell if it even recognizes my 1070, but I think it does...I tried running the Heaven benchmark off that basic display driver and just got a bunch of texture crashes which I don't think would happen off of the integrated.
And yeah, my 1070 lights up, fans whir and everything (with a DVI cable connected from my monitor to the 1070). I just think that the drivers won't work without having the newest Windows version (1607 aka Anniversary) but I've heard they still work with version 1511 as well. I even tried downloading directly from NVIDIA as well as downloading the previous driver 368, but they all result in "Windows version not compatible." I just have no idea why I am unable to update Windows and get this shit going.
As for DDU, I tried to download from wagnard's site as well as from guru3d but I was blocked with a "not granted permission" as well as a 403.
