Help with diy jbod idea

Hello all. I want to build a small in form jbod for my nas setup. A friend gave me 10 good sas drives and I want to use them to expand. Im curious what others have done especially those with space constraints as I can not use a server chassis. Need a minimum of space for 5 disks but the more the better.

Wow, those a bl**dy expensive! :exploding_head:

My suggestion:

Drive cage

Cable, you need 2 for SAS benefits, one probably suffices though, for basic connectivity.

External RAID controller

External PSU for drive cage

Still not “cheap” but at least way less then the above solutions!

Yes sir… They are very expensive from the home user’s point of view. Such a diy solution will cost less, yes, but a terrible mess… a rack type shelf, loose cables and loose psu.
As long as the OP doesn’t mind, that’s fine.

There are also slightly cheaper solutions (brand new) but for 2.5 SAS and probably 4/5 bay max.

But the OP didn’t say how much money he has for this project, what are the requirements in terms of dimensions, or even cooling, and whether 3.5/2.5.
Only that there should be a minimum of 5bay SAS and there is no space for a server chassis…

Thank you all for your input! It’s looking like the Aliexpress route maybe my way to go based on price lol

Cheap, like borscht.
