I want to make the jump to Linux but first I want to give it a try on a VM but I don't know how to set it up. Any help?
I assume you are on windows?
Just install virtual box on your PC and then download a linux ISO of your choosing.
The virtual box install wizard should be enough to get you going.
- Download Linux ISO
- Download, install, and launch VirtualBox
- Click NEW > name the virtual box,Type: linux , version : 'your distro'
- Allocate desired amount of ram to VM (at least 2048MB) > NEXT
- Tick 'create a virtual hard disk now' > NEXT
- Tick 'VirtualBox Disk Image' > NEXT
- Tick 'Dynamically Allocated' > NEXT
Allocate virtual hard disk size > CREATE
You should now see your VM on the left panel, RIGHT CLICK > SETTINGS
navigate to STORAGE on the left panel, In the storage box, Under the Controller: IDE click on EMPTY- Click on CD icon, next to the Optical Drive DropdownMenu Under Attributes, > Choose virtual optical disk > select the linux.iso > OK
Click on the VM on the left panel > START
you're VM will open up in a new window.
If you happen to have the Pro version of Windows, you have the option to use HyperV. It's pretty simple to install.
"Why use Hyper-V?"
Simple, it being Windows specific means you'll have more features and more performance, generally.
To Install Hyper-V:
Windows Key
Type "Features"
Click "Turn Windows features on or off"
Scroll to Hyper-V.
Check the box for it.
Click Ok.
You'll have to restart your system and make sure Intel VT-x is enabled in the BIOS/UEFI. Can't have a VM without it.
To open Hyper-V after reboot:
Windows Key
Type Hyper-V
Click Hyper-V Manager.
Select your PC (It will be it's host name).
Click New...
You'll need to setup a Virtual Switch to give your VM an internet connection, and you'll want to open Hyper-V Settings to configure where the files should be stored, what hardware will be used, etc.
If you just read and be logical, it's all pretty straight forward aside from very specific things.
