Hi folks, I’m new in LevelOneTech forums. I want to get back into PC building and currently considering building a small home server in a 2U or 3U rack enclosure.
Wants a power efficient server build to run proxmox for the following tasks,
Running containers in a VM - Running few containers for home automation (Home Assistant) and cloud backup tasks. Need to run 24/7
Virtualization - Running few Linux VMs for testing purposes. These can be turned on and off on-demand.
Do not need lot of storage in HDD. I have a NAS device for this purposes. The server is only for basic compute. Planned to mount the shared folder from NAS and use that as storage for backup tasks.
Appreciate your suggestions for CPU, Motherboard, RAM, power supply and rack cases.
New myself, not too knowledgeable but after reading your post I think you’ll learn a lot of great suggestions from Wolfgang’s Channel.
This video I instantly thought of and have watched a dozen times to one day attempt a similar system is this one by him (should fit within your budget and stay power efficient):
He also has other great videos going over affordable, power efficient options.
Hi @charithah, welcome to the forums. Since your budget is under 1,500, I suggest you look for used equipment instead of new or save for a new system. The reason I suggest used equipment is because a 2u or 3u rack enclosure is going to cost somewhere between 200 to 300 dollars new. I have turned my computer into my virtualization server. I spent 4,300 dollars 2 years ago for my server. I would suggest looking at second or third-generation AMD EYPC systems, but even then, you would pay at least 6,000 dollars when all is said and done. Any consumer computer can act as a little virtualization server. I am saving for a second or third-generation AMD EYPC system because I have outgrown my virtualization needs. However, you won’t need to spend as much as I do since you are just starting. I would avoid anything based on Intell due to all the problems Intel systems have had presently.
