Help: Messing around with video drivers has bricked GPU

Hello, first time poster.

Today I think my gpu has died while I was playing CSGO for linux. It suddenly displayed artifacts on screen and then froze inmediately after. After pressing the reset button, I noticed that the BIOS had glitches as well.

This definitely elevated the worry-meter to max. I've had freezing in the past, but I attributed it to a bad seating of the gpu on the pcie slot because after a reinsertion it worked fine. I also tried reinsertion but the current issue is dire, specially after seeing the NVRM errors.

To give a bit of a back story, the same day it happened I was trying to get gpu passthrough working. I had uninstalled the proprietary drivers. Tried to run csgo but that didnt work on nouveau drivers. After doing that I was invited by some friends to play, so I did a quick reinstall and ran the game. I was warming up on a DM server, but after 5 mins of playing, it froze as stated before.

I am attaching dmesg and xorg logs that might become handy for diagnostics.

Luckly I had installed ssh server the same day in anticipation of finding myself with a videoless boot. The original driver I had installed was the 375, then I tried out the one available on the ppa, 378, to no avail.

Can anyone help? I am going to install windows on a spare hdd and try it. I think this whole thing came about because of a clash of drivers and left the card in some funky state, though the persistance of the issue after resets/shutdowns has me believing it may be permanent damage.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

What are your system specs?

Have you tried a M/B & GPU BIOS reset?

Are you able to try a different PCIe slot? Or if your CPU has integrated graphics, just remove the GPU & try to boot.

Hello,

My system specs are:
* i7-4790k
* Geforce 780 GTX
* Maximus Impact VI (only one pcie slot)

I haven't tried M/B reset, though I am interested on the GPU reset. I have googled extensively since I posted and from what I have picked up the reason hovers around solder connections and reflowing the board. I will hold out the reflow option until I exhaust the solutions you pointed out.

I also installed windows expecting the nvidia driver to fix it, but unfortunately it just black screens.

The glitches are present at all times, no matter what I do. Actually, it goes away using the nouveau driver with nouveau.modeset=0 at grub boot. The display output is fixed at 640x480 but no glitches. Which confirms online suggestions of a vram solder issue.

I have tested the system on the following scenarios, all of them worked:

  • Integrated gpu
  • Old 9800 gpu

Nothing was modified to bios, I did have to uninstall Linux nvidia drivers because they complained about being to new for the old card, it then worked.

I have never heard of drivers bricking a GPU. I do not think this is possible at all.

Oh and I see now in your response to what @Mora said the card was definitely not bricked.

Many years ago my 8800GT cooked when driver (Forceware I think the package was called?) update effective disabled the fans, they never turned on so the card cooked. Was known fault apparently.

Do you have dual bios switch at all? If not, a spare cheap gpu to boot off of to bios flash you main GPU would be a solution. There's throw away $25-50 GPUs out there at bestbuy or online, always good to have one as a backup when messing with the GPU at the bios level.

Thanks for that info. Also I think it is trying to jog my memory in regards to something more recent that did this too. I will scour the net looking for stuff like this and report back when I found it.

Well here is an article where it was said that a certain Nvidia driver bricked cards and it was talked about for months but it was shown to be false ....

Around 2010/2011 I think, I remember playing Aion at the time.
I've used ATI/AMD ever since.
Anyway, I guess this isn't helping OP... :pensive:

Hello,

I want to say thanks for your time, I managed to fix the problem.

As previously stated, I cleared out the possibility of it being a motherboard issue by running an old gpu (9800).

What ultimately fixed it was taking the gpu apart, cleaning it and then giving the gpu a reflow with some tools I had. I am not sure what did it now because when I took it apart there was some oily stuff that had leaked out of the sil pads.

I cant definitly point out to the reflow as the solution because I suspect that with the amount of dust that was present, this oil stuff might have turned conductive.

This was my process for reference:

  1. Took card apart.
  2. I submerged the card in 99% alcohol and gave it a nice scrubbing. Everything went through (fans, heatsink, board).
  3. Used aluminum foil to cover board and made cutout for Nvidia chip.
  4. Set a fancy "heatgun" to 230*C (lead free solder melts at 188) and put a thermocouple on the surface of the chip itself.
  5. Slowly I brought the heat gun from far to close to slowly increase the temperature about 10*C every 20 seconds till I got at around 100*C measured.
  6. Once I stayed at that temperature for about 30 seconds, I placed the nozzle at about 1 cm away from the chip while giving it a circular motion.
  7. I spent about a minute doing so. Care must be taken to not move or bump the card for the next 5 minutes.
  8. Reassembled the card with some new thermal compound and left the old sil pads because I didnt have any new at hand.
  9. Crossed my fingers and turned the pc on. It worked.

Here are some shots of the oily substance. It cant be appreciated on the board itself, but it was all over the VRAM chips and the board itself.

The oil could've been from the fan motors.

Heat gun rework? Expect about a few months out of the chip

Try the oven bake trick like Linus Tech Tips lol

I also had an EVGA GTX780 that was doing something very similar. It began drawing random lines and squares on the monitor, even in the BIOS and boot screens. When I described this to EVGA, they immediately stopped playing twenty questions with me and they said that they would immediately ship out a replacement. It was obvious that they had seen this problem before.

In the several weeks leading up to this, I was having random crashes to a black screen, with audio playing through the speakers. I removed the cooler and found that only a little over 1/2 of the die had thermal paste on it. It was bizarre, it was like someone drew a diagonal line across the die and the paste was all on one side of the line.

Update,

Eventually the card refused to output any video and was replaced for another newer model.

Either billgatez or Luis Rossmann jinxed it. ;D
