Headsets connection quality

For gaming headsets, can USB connected headsets provide the same quality as one connected via 3.5mm connectors? I am looking for a good virtual 7.1 surround sound headset, so I can use it on my laptop, and there are some I have been looking into that use USB. I would like to know if they can provide the same quality before paying $100 USD for one.

better even... unless you have a nice addon soundcard.... the usb ones have their own soundcards.... i suggest the steeleseries siberia v2

usb are generaly considered better I cant tell the diffrence.

Unless you are going to be plugging into the front 3.5 connectors which are often unshilded and sucky its probably not worth the extra money.

the plantronics gamecom 780 is a really good quality virtual 7.1 (USB) audio headset, and also has one of the best mics.

it depends on the quality of the headset. USB headsets have their own sound card, so cheap headphones will = cheap sound.

also, a lot of the drivers suck for them (at least in my experience).

i would say good headphones with sound car > good headphones with built in soundcard > usb headset > shit headphones with built in.

also, if you are looking at gimmicky 5.1 / 7.1 headsets... dont do it. you get better directional audio out of a pair of good cans. i would go into the reason why, but it would be lengthy and uncalled for.
