Headphones For Prog Rock

Hello I am looking for some headphones that would be suited to the genre Progressive rock. From artists such as King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd and many other artists (Just mentioned those because they are the most well known) however I also listen to lots of Jazz and many other genres but I would mainly like headphones that go well with Progressive Rock.

I have a budget of Around $250-$300 Australian Dollars but if it is cheaper that is fine.

Any suggestions are thoroughly appreciated and thanks.

I don't know what the prices are like there. If you could give me a website that I could search which would have the prices that you would pay, I would be better informed. However, off the top of my head, I would say whatever Grado you can afford (people say they generally all sound very similar, but you can find comparisons of whatever is in your price range I'm sure). The Q701 is also good for rock. The upper mid peak it has really makes guitars sound nice. There are a lot of options, but those would be the main two that I would look into if you are only concerned about rock. Would you prefer closed headphones? Many people do and both of the places I pointed to earlier are open which can be an issue if you are in a noisy environment. Also, are iems acceptable? The Rockit Sounds R-50 is a good choice for rock and well priced imo.

It would be nice to know if you have an amp and/or dac as well.

Here are some websites that are in Australia that I have found: http://headphones.com.au/

http://www.addictedtoaudio.com.au/

and I guess you could look at ebay.com.au

I have a DAC/AMP and I would prefer open headphones and not really looking for IEMs

Hope this helps.

But what DAC/AMP do you have? The suggestions that I make could be greatly affected by that.

I have a fairly cheap DAC/AMP I have the HiFiMan EF2a

I recently got my Beyerdynamic DT-990 pro, imo King Crimson/Pink Floyd sound amazing with them. but the sound signature is very subjective.

the bass is very strong, and the highs are also very pronounced.

i saw a frequency response graph somewhere, where the highs looked like a middle finger pointed at all the treble haters :D but i cant find it anymore.

the DT-990s are open, so you will get a bigger soundstage but more sound will leak out and more noise can get in from the outside.

if you dont like the U-shaped sound (high bass, high treble), you could go for the Beyerdynamic Custom one pro. they are completely closed, and they have little sliders on the bottom to adjust the Bass.

they have a really flat sound, with highs, mids and lows pretty balanced. (except if you crank up the bass slider :D)

i love the build quality on the beyerdynamics, and im german so i have to recommend them :D

also, im sorry for you guys, everything is so damn expensive in australia :(

Right now, what I am seeing that is in your price range is mainly the SR125i which is a pretty good choice, but a but thin in the mids and sub bass. Bright sound overall. The DT990 pro should have a very similar upper end, but a lot more in the way of mid and sub bass. The pricing on things there is messing with my options (I have the American prices memorized, so it is throwing me for a loop a little). A little above your price range, the HE400 is pretty beloved, though I have no idea how they would do with your prog rock.

EDIT: If you want a more laid back and less aggressive sound with a warm signature, then look towards the HD600. That is a really solid choice.

I think I may go with the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro they seem to look very nice and the openness does not bother me, I live in a quite area and my room is isolated from everyone else. It sucks to have everything so expensive here. I am in the process of building a new computer and the parts are so expensive compared to everywhere else. Thank you all very much for your help and I hope you have a good day.
