Has anyone had any luck with encoding h264 or hevc with a virtual function passed through to a vm? I have a proxmox host and a fedora vm with up to date kernels. I’m on the old firmware that still allows 12 vfs, and I have it set to use 4. vainfo doesn’t show h264 or hevc and running a ffmpeg test resulted in a function not implemented error. I was hoping to run jellyfin in a vm with gpu transcoding.
I do this all day every day. It’s the reason I bought 4 of the b50 pros. However, I use windows. But I can assure you the hardware works wonderfully.
Does it only work on windows vms?
I assume it will also work on Linux if you configure it correctly. As I’m not using Linux, I can’t offer any specifics there. What I can confirm is that it works perfectly in windows, so the hardware is not likely the source of the problem if you are having one.
I’d double check your Proxmox host settings, and ensure that your motherboard and things are all set up to allow SRIOV / IOMMU. I’ve only dealt with Intel iGPUs so far, but here’s my Proxmox GRUB config:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet intel_iommu=on iommu=pt i915.enable_guc=3 i915.max_vfs=7”
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“”
Then also ensure you have the correct VF passed into your VM. For me, since my Jellyfin server is a LXC Container in Proxmox, not a full VM, I configured it manually with the line
dev0: /dev/dri/renderD129,gid=104
Hope that helps.
