Hardware Advice for 2U Proxmox Node (12th Gen/W680, ECC, Quiet)

Hello,

I’d like to build a 2U i7-12700-based system with 128 GB of ECC RAM for use as a Proxmox node.

I’ve already got the CPU and the RAM; they’re in a Dell Precision 3660T, which takes up way too much room in my office.

I have 2U of rack space and would like to build a quiet W680 server that will fit in there. I know it won’t be silent, especially when the GPU is active in a Bazzite VM, but I want it to be tolerable to be turned on 24/7 in a bedroom office.

I’d really appreciate some suggestions on:

  1. Chassis;
  2. PSU;
  3. Motherboard;
  4. Fans;
  5. CPU cooler.

I’ve seen some good looking W680 boards on Ali Express that got me thinking about doing this. Has anyone else built something similar?
