I currently have a GTX 580 and I'm thinking of adding a second one for SLi. GTX 580 . Right now I'm just looking for other peoples opinions. I don't have enough money yet.
This card can pretty much play most games maxed out with the exception of some games like Far Cry 3, Metro 2033, Crysis 2, BF3, etc. It's just the more demanding games out there where this card struggles to maintain playable framerate at ultra settings. My definition of "playable framerate" is maintaining a minimum of 60fps. Not in all games. Usually just FPS where I need more frames for better precision while aiming.
Anyways I was thinking about buying a second card for SLi but I thought I should see if there are any alternatives to going the SLi route. Maybe someone here might have some input.
Waiting for the GTX 700/800 (whatever they call it).
I prefer Nvidia and I prefer EVGA. I'm not a fan boy I just prefer it (and I like PhysX).
My logic is that I should buy the 580 because it's cheaper than getting a 680 and the SLi would give much better performance. I want to prepare my system for next gen games like Watch Dogs and I want to improve my performance in games like Far Cry 3.
The Reason I'm asking this is because there are people in the same situation as me who have asked this question on other forums and people have been saying to get the GTX 680 or 7970.
Is going SLi a good investment? If not then maybe I can get some suggestions for an alternative?
Don't upgrade. Save your money for next gen (if you really need the upgrade. I would wait until GTX8xx and just buy on day 1), High isn't that much different from ultra. If you have a 580 then another 580 is just a money sink as well as a TDP nightmare, you won't see much of a boost in games that don't scale well and the games you listed are optimized better for amd cards.
If the money in your pocket is really burning a hole i'd recommend investing it in something a little more future proof like a 120hz IPS panel.
I bought 2 asus GTX 580 dcii when they came out. Was the single fastest GPU out there, and i spent about a grand on them. 2 days ago i was watching a video on the GTX 650 ti boost. The gtx 650 ti boost has way better stats (cuda cores, clock speed and memory size) than the gtx 580 I had. you can pick up one for less than $200. Me, personaly I bought a GeForce Titan. The life span of one will be about 2-3 years before it cant play on ultra pre-sets on the curent Gen games in the future. There is no way that a 780 will beat a titan unless they charge $700 for the gtx 780. The gtx 680 might be 2 years before it can't play games smoothly on ultra presets. The more money you spend the longer it will last before it starts to suck. you should just wait for a GTX 780 or go for a Titan. Or if you just want to play on ultra presets. than save some money and go for the AMD equvilant HD 7970. It should last just as long as the gtx 680, 2 years.
How does the GTX 580 SLi compare to a single Titan? I've been trying to find an unbiased review but I get people saying that a single GTX 680 is faster than GTX 580 SLi.
I was planning on buying one of these somewhere down the line. BenQ. I probably should have listed my current specs and monitor at the bottom of my original post. Right now I have a nice monitor and it still works but I know what you mean about the 120hz.
I'm trying to compare the performance of GTX 580 SLi with a GTX Titan and the future GTX 780/880. The problem with getting a 7970 or GTX 680 is that I would have to pay $400-$500 for a single card that can't quite compete with 2 GTX 580's.
It's kind of a tough decision because I understand why some people are saying "go with a single GPU". Nvidia isn't making this purchase easy for me since the Titan is $1000 and I was going to get it if it was $500.
If the GTX 700 series is a kepler refresh then there is no way that a GTX 780 could be faster than a Titan as mentioned by bacawaka. If that's the case then GTX 580 SLi would still be faster than a single GTX 780.
