Graphicscard for TrueNAS Scale

So I built my TrueNAS Scale server

This is the Thread for those who a curios:
Buildplan

My issue is, that my old PCs CPU does not have a API/iGPU in it. For my initial setup I installed this computers GPU and removed it. Now it turns out I actually need to access the BIOS occasionally. Reinstalling my old gaming card means the removal of my HDDs, which is annoying.
Also, on my to-do list is the hosting of a media sever; therefor hardware trans coding may be beneficial

Therefor I am considering adding a very basic GPU so I don’t have to deal with that…

I couldn’t really find any information about compatibility. What works best from your point of view? Some of my ideas where:

  • Quadro P400 (Used), T400 (New) or A400 (New)
  • WX3200 (new)
  • M2000 (used)

or will a simple GT720 do the trick?

For transcoding I would use a more modern one with AV1, how about a used Arc A310? Should be available for 100 bucks and is available in a single slot design

The compatibility question is more related to what you are going to use the GPU for, not for TrueNAS itself

Video output to configure the BIOS and very likely some light transcoding…

I could get a new one for about 120€…

A basic GPU like the GT 720 should work for BIOS access, but for hardware transcoding, a Quadro P400 or T400 is a better choice due to better NVENC/NVDEC support. The M2000 is older but could still work. It depends on your media server—what software are you planning to use?

For transcoding in Plex or JellyFin - A380 or if you can find 1 slot A40
