ok so i have a gtx 760. and while the performance is ok. im not able to use over 40% of its power. im watching it in evga precision and the temps are always good. low 50s to 60
my other system specs are:
Dell exp 420 with dell bios and Mobo , bios version A04 "wich is old but w/e" computer works fine
cpu - Q6600 @ stock 2.4
ram - 3 gigs @ 667 speed
os - windows vista 32
psu is a thermaltake 600watt
so yea...this is very frustrating. im thinking its eather the motherboard pci 2 slots and bios that might not be letting it run as hard as it wants. The wierd thing is that EVERY SINGLE GAME. runs at 40% usage. dosnt matter what it is..... so i mean theres no way its the cpu cuase that would mean that every game is using the exact ammount from the cpu and that cant be the case
Right now i'm playing BF3 , d3 , path of exile , world of warcraft ( fps terrible in 25mans btw ) and sc2...
and NOT ONE of them has a different GPU usage on the precision x. i have gone into settings turned all the games to MAX PERFORMANCE PREFFERED . and all that did was make it so that im running 1054mhz on the clock. but for some reason it still only says that im only using 40% of my gpu... on top of that. i know its telling the truth.
And the reason is...like say im loading into a BF3 game.. or im at the character selection screen in World of Warcraft. the thing is running at like 800+ FPS lol.... and gpu usage goes up very very quickly like 80% or higher if i let it.. i have to be fast about getting out of that screen. cause my temps go up like 1 every second... this is only in wow though.. diablo 3 actually sits at a perfect 60fps...and its tries soooo freaking hard to blaze past that.. but im running on a 60hertz monitor . and i guess the game syncs up with the card and my monitor well , i dunno. however it uses like 38-39%..and i guess that's all it needs to . but for sc2 and warcraft and bf3 i get .....40%....never lower .. never higher..and its funny cause i have the most fps in bf3 on high settings than i do in sc2 and in wow with lower settings... I have tried the new beta driver. went back to the old driver cause it couldn't pick up my monitor after it wanted me to restart computer so now i'm back to version 320.49 instead of the the beta one..
Sorry for the long post but id like a better answer than . oh its a cpu bottleneck lol... ok that explains why like 5 games are using right at 40% and somtimes 2 % less than that.. i just dont buy it , that cant be the reason. could it be ram? i dont think so.. maby the motherboard? os? i dunno
Does the Gpu usage go up if you change your settings, for example going from 0x msaa 1080p to 4x msaa 2880x1620 (donwsampling)? Have you tried monitoring your cpu usage, temp and mem usage while gaming? Maybe the cpu cooler got loose and your pc is throtteling. A Q6600 @ stock would definitely limit your fps to around 30 in bf3 multi, but singleplayer and wow should run fine (at least bf3 singleplayer runs fine @ 3.2 for me). How did the system run before you upgraded?
btw, a 6300 + mobo + ram would cost less than the 760....
i have tried all settings in all games. and its still only uses 40% usage of the gpu. and oddly enough i set to max performance in the nvidia settings " per game" the GLOBAL setting is still set to adaptive. so that it dosn't use all that extra power outside of gaming.
the temps sit at around 55 to 60+ most of the time under 55 though. so i know its not throttling because of temps.
the CPU usage is always around eather 30-70% will up a bit higher if i have a brower open and using a comunication software like vent, skype in world of warcraft. but one core is really stressing .....it seems to be topping off alot or getting close to topping off. but overall usage is roughly 50% across all cores in all games. wich is kinda odd considering its a 2.4ghz
i find it odd that even though i have my games toggled to prefered max performance mode ( wich turns my card up to 1054 mhz all the time).....the card still is only using 40% or at least thats what is displayed on my evga precision .
so eather evga precision isnt showing the true MHZ value and just showing that number becuase i set it to perfered max settings.. and maby its just showing that lol...if i set it to adaptive for my games.... it will actually use far less than 40% it goes down into the 20% range. so maby it is telling the truth about the 40% but i dont think the whole 1054 mhz is going through the pipe for whatever reason...and regardless of what setting i use in the graphics settings in each game.. it will use the same 40%. and also i see very little fps difference unless i turn everything to extreme low settings and then you get a pretty good 20fps boost..but the medium - high and ultra settings seem to all work the same
btw my native screen res is only 1600-900 native so i cant really use different resolution as a means to see if it will go up. and from how its behaving i just know that wouldnt change anything.. cause i mean.. i can set it to lower resolution and it wouldnt use less power..
the only way it would use less power is if i set the power mode to "ADAPTIVE" wich would then use the gpu boost 2.0 and throttle it down to low 20's 30's and again. capping at 40 regardless of what game i play
i was looking into that last night.. and from what i can tell. i cant really even get a new bios upgrade that would do anything to increase the bandwidth whatsoever LOL it sucks.. its just to old
also i dont have a usb thumbdrive atm so thats not an options right now even if i had a mobo worth upgrading the drivers for.
im not 100% sure about the flashing though. ill do a bit of reading around about that and see what i might can do. thx for reply
thx for reply. yea i'm just not so sure about it ..becuase why would it uses ONLY 40% no matter what game i play lol.. i mean some games are far more cpu intensive than others
for example diablo 3 and path of exile. i mean those games have hardly anything going on... when it comes to 25man heroic raiding in world of warcraft ...yea i would say cpu. but its just weird that its exactly 40 on every game. no matter what settings.
from what i have seen so far. i almost think its my motherboard more than anything. not so much of the pcie 2.0 on it. just the chipset n' shit..just the overall design and the driver. its like a 6 year old board lol
i dont think its the slot more than it may be the board itselt just not being able to utilize it fully. but being such an old board you are probably right with the new platform thing.
This is a perfect example of bottlenecking. You got a good GPU and paired it up with an awful cpu. The gpu can't handle the processing power of the cpu so it forces the gpu to stop at a certain state. Upgrade your cpu, ram and operating system if you can (cpu upgrade is a must).
I believe you said that you will be upgrading to a new Intel system? You should see new performance parameters with your new setup. I'm confident that it will reveal your current CPU as the culprit.
The 760 is a reasonably powerful card, I would class it as high-end card. It's paired with a pretty low end CPU, at this time. I wouldn't pair that CPU with anything higher than a 7850, personally. It's not an appropriately balanced system.
so i assume that every game. no matter how taxing it is on the cpu..the gpu is limited by 60% of its total power becuase the cpu design ( no matter what game ) tells the gpu ....to only use 40%?... its just so weird
and after all the reading i did last night. i was seeing other set ups with other similar cpus that run their gpu higher
and .....if anything..the gpu would at least throttle more or less on any given game... this one is just redlined at 40 and want use more or less.. unless i turn on adaptive power mode for each game . then it will decide to use less. even in path of exile wich is a retardedly low end graphics game lol. its just wierd..
Sorry but I have had this problem and it was a very easy fix for me. It was nothing to do with bottlenecking or not enough power to gpu ect. But my problem was that in the Nvidia control panel I had power management mode set to 'Adaptive' which made me have horrible frames in games and changing setting in game would solve nothing. So I changed that to 'prefer maximum performance' and then all my games were running fine. Back to 100 fps or more compared to about 15.
So try that out I may be wrong and it could actually be something in your system causing the low performance. Good luck!
I think what I posted is useless to you. While I was writing this up someone replied mentioning the adaptive mode and other.
btw i havnt been looking at cpu temps.. i dont have ocz or prime95 or w/e.. didnt trust any of the sites that google would bring up for downloading. and just looking at 50% usage i would assume that its not going up in temps but i dunno i need to look into that probably
yea i have that set to performance in games.. and i have it set to adaptive in global. but yea still 40% usage. all the adaptive will do if i set it to that for the games. is throttle down like an idiot lol
nvidia needs to fix that gpu 2.0 crap its retarded. but yea i can stop the throttling now.. but id like to see more than 40% in EVERY game i play. i wouldnt care if it was just diablo 3 and path of exile . but BF3 , wow , and Starcraft 2 . need way more than freakin 40% lol....specially on high and ultra settings
i don't even know why i'm posting my psu specs , cuase like i said its trying to pump out that 1054 mhz when i have performance mode enabled... but i don't think its REALLY giving that power to the games. it probably wants to. but it cant cause of some kind of hardware limitation. its just hard to believe its my cpu limiting it to 40% in every game i play. no matter how much load the cpu has... even in 1 player games its 40%
for example if i play bf3 1player mode , or go into a 64 player map. its 40% no matter what setting i put the graphics on...... AND THAT is why im not so sure about the cpu thing. can somone give me a logical reason as to why it would be . cuase it makes no sense
ok so you are saying that 2.4 ghz cpu....is only gonna allow 40% of a gtx 760's power ...no matter what application i run.. and no matter how stressing it is on the cpu?....like im a noob but im pretty sure that is not how these things work. give me some info to prove what you say lol
