Google Fiber’s latest FCC filing

What’s every incumbent ISP’s worst nightmare? If we had to guess, it looks something like the filing that Google just made with the Federal Communications Commission. As The Wall Street Journal reports, Google this week told the FCC that reclassifying broadband providers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act would have a big side benefit for Google Fiber because it would give Google Fiber the same access to utility poles and other key infrastructure currently enjoyed by Comcast, AT&T and other big-name ISPs.

not in the US... and this is dealing with the US

this sounds exciting!

"Wrong" is subjective in this sense, especially when dealing with linguistics.

Even still, the spelling is irrelevant. Google Fiber is a company name; therefore, we can't really argue against it. It would be the same as calling out Logan for naming his website "Tek Syndicate" instead of "Tech Syndicate".

I know I'll likely never have the opportunity to subscribe to Google Fiber, but I'm still looking forward to its success. It makes me happy to see that Google Fiber is getting under these big-name ISPs' skin.

indeed i'd love nothing more than to see the big ISPs have some interference with the spread of google fiber and i hope it will spread fast enough for all of us to have the chance to enjoy 1 gb/s internet at $70 before we die

it makes it plain as day that laying fiber infrastructure is not that expensive and all the teleco's telling us different is a flat out lie

Well even though Google fiber wont be in my area ever, My local ISP in Ohio told me a few weeks ago that they will be launching their own fiber network next year and hoping they can be under Title II. Kinda happy about this, they still haven't decided on prices yet somewhere between $120-150 per month. Right now they do not use DSL or anthing wires, The have wireless towers they are using and the speed are not too bad but cost a lot. I am only getting 4 down and 1 up most of the time and pay $65 a month for it. Just like to see Google set the standards for prices.

With copper becoming expensive I'm sure we might be approaching the point where is copper infrastructure breaks is might actually be cheaper to replace it with optical fibre except like in my back yard in the UK where Fibre optics are taxed. Even DSL needs to be terminated at both ends, like fibre.

Not least it would be really nice to be done RFI, Impluse noise, REIN and SHINE, introducing all sorts of errors into DSL inherent in wired and wireless.

That's the way google, get that fiber out there and make the big ISP's crap themselves in anger as their illegally huge profit margins vanish, despite their argument that "people don't want faster service, see? We give them no options but to buy our crappy service and they still do!"

I love this news.

Oh and nice to see you again trikstari, I think I've seen you around on LTT. Always nice to find decent communities.

Yeah I'm trying to switch over. The LTT forums are just too...meh as of late. Yesterday there was a gun argument that went on for like 15 pages, with some kid, who is talking about how his air gun is perfectly fine for a self defense weapon *facepalm*

I do wish these forums were a bit more active. But the people seem much nicer.

Oh no! Big ISPs are afraid of competition! What are we going to do?!!!

BUY MORE SENATORS, QUICKLY!

I still like both, but I just stay away from the general boards and stick to the gaming, build and other sections.

There is nothing illegal about huge profit margins nor should there be. What should be illegal is blocking competition out of a market in order to give the consumers no recourse.

I don't give Comcast, Time Warner, or Verizon my money and you shouldn't either. If more people would quit complaining and let their money do the talking this wouldn't be a problem. Hell, for all the stuff said on The Tek, Logan still uses Comcast.

and what are we supposed to use? we need internet somehow. there's usually no competition for comcast...

Move, cause an uproar, whatever. If you ever expect things to change in your favor use your money. Salt Lake City has a great ISP that has been pushing back and was even acknowledged on The Tek. If people walk away from a town that allows that junk, they would change their laws as their tax revenue would be leaving. Heck, I'm gearing up to move to FL in a year or two to get out of paying state income taxes and may set myself up to go to UT for the long term. When you pick a house to move into, check what ISPs are available. It could be that three doors down there are better services.
