Glad I put fiber between our cable modem and network

We have always had issues with lightning taking out our cable modem. (we live in the midwest) We put spark gaps, surge suppressors to try to protect our network. A few years ago it really took a bunch of hardware out. I finally put the cable modem in a separate area - with a mikrotik ethernet → fiber converter both on its own ups… (plus now we have a 2nd internet provider for redundancy…)

anyway - hear thunder close and the cable internet drops out. Go check on the cable modem and pick up the mikrotik (its not lit up) which is sitting on the ups. This is what I see…

Cable modem still works… Go figure…

Yea surge protectors only protect from surges coming from inside a house. Not lightning. I.e appliances surging.

that looks like a spot weld … like the lightning arced over to the metal case of the switch … no wonder it’s not working anymore
