Gigabyte R9 280x crashing

So recently I bought and installed a Gigabyte R9 280x and it has been crashing. It usually happens when I am in a game for around 5-10 minutes running perfectly fine and then my screen freezes, goes blank, and nothing shows up. The game/pc is still running because I can hear game sounds from the headset. Sometimes the display drivers recover showing a notification on the bottom right. "amd display driver has stopped responding and has recovered"

PC Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X 3GB WINDFORCE Video Card

MOBO: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

RAM: A-Data XPG V2 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400 Memory

PSU: Corsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Other notes: I have run this system with an MSI HD7750 having similar problems. I also have run this system with a GTX 660ti having no problems at all.

EDIT: Just to let you know I am currently running CCC v14.4 with updated drivers to the most recent version.

You will find that your Corsair 500W is to blame for this problem. 500W is not enough to power a single R9 280X. The 280X pulls at least 250-260W alone. Your 660Ti only pulls 130-135W at load. I would recommend at least 620W-700W for a system being built around that card.

So the problem is not enough power? That would cause the gpu to crash/freeze. Would this also be the case with the HD 7750, that one uses less power.

500W is well over what is required, power is not the problem.

You say you're having trouble with two AMD cards, but no problems with an Nvidia card? When you installed the AMD drivers, did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers?

I've heard stories of some R9 cards being defective. If you're having issues with two AMD cards, I would say a defective card was unlikely. It does sound like a display driver.

I'm pretty sure a 500w psu can handle a 280x and a 4770k without a single problem.. It can't be the psu

Yes i completely removed all Nvidia software/drivers before i put in the new card/drivers. I also removed all older AMD drivers/software as well.

Not all 500W power supplies are the same, and the CX is not a higher end Corsair unit (limited to 38A, the 280X needs 30A). The rumors of defective R9 cards are true (mostly Sapphire Toxic), but two failures leads me to think that he has more than just driver issues.

BTW: "I'm pretty sure" comments just make me . Leave stuff like that for the [H] forums.

I have been doing some testing/troubleshooting. I underclocked the 280x's Core Clock to 850MHz, after reading some other threads by people that have been having the same problem. So far it has been stable in games for 40 min, although the performance is much worse. So is this because its using less power so its more stable but has less performance? Or is the card bad and just cant handle the higher speed. Ask if you need more details, i'm kinda bad at this troubleshooting stuff.

This guy was having similar issues with an even better power supply.

I'm not fond of Corsair's CX series, but I have known people to run the 280x on such a unit, and without complaint.

Furthermore, I've actually heard that the Sapphire Toxic is one of the better models to get. The complaint appears to have affected batches of ASUS branded cards. Maybe it is wider spread.

So anyone have any ideas? Should I get a more powerful PSU and if that doesn't fix the problem should I return the card for a replacement one and see if it is a bad card?

I had the same problem when I went crossfire 7950s. I know you are only using 1 gpu but this may help and is worth a shot. Google up how to disable ULPS in the registry, reboot and see if that helps.

Ok i'll try that if my current troubleshooting doesn't work. Right now I removed all drivers I could find for graphics cards. Then I installed the drivers from the disc that it came with. I have been downloading the current ones from the website before. It installed Catalyst Control Center V13.12, so it's definitely an older version.

I'll report back after some testing and if doesn't work out I will try the ULPS.

Note: I didn't install the hdmi sound drivers this time, I read some other guy didn't install them and it fixed his problems.

Ok, so from testing in a few games (AC3, Minecraft, Rust, Thief, FTL) I have had a few problems. Most of the games ran fine except for Minecraft and FTL. Minecraft crashed the display drivers on startup (game not launcher) and the game also crashed. I eventually got it to work but the performance was not good. The next problem was with FTL. I turned on fullscreen in the video settings and it bluescreened my pc. The error/bug code I got was "0xa0000001" give or take a few 0s.

So after searching on the Microsoft bug reference page (link) nothing exactly matched the error code. The two closest ones were "0xA1" and "0x000000A1". The first one has to do with "power policy manager" and the second one has to do with the "PCI Bus driver" detecting inconsistency.

So is this part of the problem? It has only bluescreened once before and it had the same error code. Is this a PCI problem or the power?

Having the exact same problem. Random pixelated glitches on my monitor, with screen tearing and crashing in games. Usually only at higher settings. I've noticed that restarting the game sometimes will fix the problem. In games like Planetside 2 when the driver crashes it sometimes fixes the issue. I have the exact same psu as you do, but only one graphics card (my r9 280)
