The SB6141 is only a modem, not a modem/router combo, FYI. -edit: Just realized the other white Motorola modem is as well.

I’ve used that modem in the past and have no complaints though.

I know that but thanks for the tip, Im looking for router as well.

Gotcha, just thought you were looking for a combo unit.

No I understand, I could have been clearer, I know separate units will provide better results.

thoughts?

Budget?

What speed is he getting?

Roughly 100Mbits down and 20Mbits up but its not speed is the issue, he streams and at times his internet randomly drops packets like crazy.

if this doesnt fix his issue then it possibly his computer.

He willing to spend up to like $130 but trying to budget here.

he also can’t run a 100 foot Ethernet, so he needs something with range. hence why I am liking that router I posted. The modem is on his bottom floor where he is on the second floor.

In that case I’d try getting a 6141 w/ a Ubiquiti Edgerouter X & UAP-AC-LITE. Ideally I’d like a 6183 which would still see some speed improvements but a 6141 fits into the budget a bit better.

SB6141 ~$20 eBay
Edgerouter X $40 right now
UAP-AC-LITE ~$80

$140 total

Honestly I’ve given up on consumer grade routers. Their uptime and reliability is just plain pathetic. I find that as time goes on there are more and more dropouts and difficulties connecting with an all in one consumer box. I switched over from ATT to Comcast and upgraded my home network while I was at it. I have the UAP-AC-LR model since I’m in a rather large 2-story house and it punches through all the walls without issue. Ubiquiti has pretty easy setup now even if you don’t need all the fancy features and has uptime unlike any cheap router I’ve tried.

Is he serious about streaming ? if yes i would recommend a cable connection.

not possible, we discussing maybe a PoE solution possibly

Powerline/Homeplug might be a solution but it really varies from house to house. I kept getting dropouts a few times a week in my house. You almost definitely won’t get the full 100/20 speed though.

his wiring is brand new.

something like these is what I was thinking maybe.

It will still depend on both distance and in general house to house. The ratings are pretty much the best case lab scenario, so don’t expect anywhere near their rated performance in real life usage.
