Freenas Wifi

Hello

New to this

I want to build myself a home server/NAS

I want to use FreeNas, but i need mine to run over wireless, would i need a bridge or does Freenas not support wifi at all??

I can’t have my NAS by the router or run cables as the router is to far away and i don’t want to have to rewire the house

Move it.
If you want to do it. Research it.

I just wanted to know if any one had tried it

Heard that freenas doesn't like wif

You can get the drivers.
Running a production freenas over wifi is dumb.
Any non-production system doesn't need to be constrained to a specific place.

I would love to do a wire but if i went the only option which is around the outside of the house its going to cost me more in wire than idea, i worked it our to nearly 200m this when i costed it up was over £400 just for the cable

What do you mean non-producton??

I am sorry I'm really new to this only build my first pc last year and got to the point i need more storage

non-production meaning only for testing purposes since your actually using it for storage it's production just not mission critical.

You want it wired to the router other than that is doesn't matter. Even if you use a wifi bridge to get between routers you want it wired. Move it to the router. You say it's a house so moving it isn't an issue and is probably a good thing. You want it in a secluded area like an attic or a closet (assuming adaquate cooling) bottom line keep it wired wifi is too hard to be worth the effort.

That makes sense

i will have to see what i can do, the problem s the router location s at the bottom of my stairs in the hall way, but i could look to build my nas into the cabinet it sits on, go ikea case instead of a normal case

What rooms is the router next to?
Maybe you could shove a cable through the wall to the next room instead of across the entire house.
If you put it in a cabinet you may have to drill holes to keep it cool.

Its in the far corner, only on 2 external walls, unfortunately the door is next to the front door, its currently on top of a shoe cabinet,

Drilling holes isn't a problem, i could even have it draw fresh air from outside if needed perhaps an 80mm fan that sucks outside air into the cabinet

Do you use freeNAS?

If so what speed do you get??

I was thinking of just using ubuntu server and putting the wifi on and just using terminal or use full ubuntu and have remote desktop

I'm getting about 8MB over wifi which is kinda high for what wireless G can do. 7MB max so not too high. Moving about 5 GB in 10 minutes at that speed. So kinda slow but remember this is over wifi. I have the freenas server running in a vm on my machine. so it goes over wifi because the server sees a wired connection.

That makes sense

I do have a sky hd wireless receiver box i could use

That gives a hard wire connection to the nas

Have to give that a try

Got a sr102 hub I could use as a router for my room

sorry but thats rubbish a 300m box of cat5 will only cost £40
