Day 1 Progress

Installed freenas, was pretty straight forward.

Decided to use RaidZ1 (5TB usable space). Got my windows share up and running; just for general use. Simply copied my photos, documents, videos, music and such over from my PC. Easy enough.

Installed SyncThing plugin. Installed the app on my phone to sync my phone pictures over to the FreeNAS jail. Used the windows app to point from the SyncThing share to photos windows share.

Testing shows that it syncs very quickly. I can take a photo with my phone and it syncs within seconds. I’ve heard about battery life concerns so we’ll see how it goes.

Moving Forward

Not entirely sure, maybe Plex media server? It’s something I’ve thought about but I’m not too sure about how much I would actually use it.

Also need to think about off-site and local backup options, I’m open to suggestions here. Also, error reporting via email would probably be useful. Just in case a drive starts to fail when I’m out.

Any advice/ comments are appreciated, I’m fairly new to this.
