Free pc sruffs good choice?

I recently got a grant from my University for $650; it strictly has to go to a new computer for school work. The parts have to be approved in the sense that I am not building a PC for my leisurely activities but rather for school work. This means no graphics cards... It is stupid but I wont complain about free money. I am a physics major doing work in remote sensing and I regularly have to run simulations on my PC ( The irony comes in because with a few optimizations they run faster on my GPU). I also play a few games and I plan to buy a next gen GPU for star citizen. I currently have a HD-4870 1GB.

Here are the parts I have picked out:

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

-FX-9370

-Corsair H105

-Corsair Vengeance 1600 DDR3 16GB

Current system isn't anything special, however I am reusing my 750W Corsair PSU   my case HDD optical drive ect.

What do you think? Every penny extra comes out of my pocket which in turn is food out of the fridge. I tried doing an Intel build but I haven't had the time to decipher all of their model numbers as I have been out of the loop for two years or so. Thank you in advance for the help!

Also First post!!

About Intel:

  • No suffix means it is the 'normal', basic version of that processor
  • 'K' suffix means it can be overclocked
  • 'S' suffix means lower power (65w vs. 84w)
  • 'T' suffix means even lower power (45w vs. 84w)
  • 'R' suffix means lower power (65w vs. 84w) AND better integrated graphics

As for the numbering system:

  • The very first number after i3/i5/i7 is the generation the chip is (i.e. an i5 3570K is third gen, i7 4770K is fourth gen)
  • The second number is more or less the group it is in. Higher number generally means faster (i.e. the i5 4670 is faster than the i5 4570).
  • The third number is where it is in the group established by the preceding number, once again higher is faster. (The i5 4440 is faster than the i5 4430)
  • The last number is usually 0. If it's not 0, it usually means the processor is specialized in some way.

Anyways, your build looks good to me. That CPU runs stupid hot though, so I'd just make sure you have good static pressure fans on that radiator.

EDIT: Oh, and some poeple will probably recommend an Asus M5A99FX Pro or Asus M5A99X Evo because they're Asus or whatever. Last I knew Gigabyte figured out the problems with their boards a while ago.

Awesome post and thank you very much for the Intel info!  I really Cant decide H105 or H110. The H110 is $10 cheaper but I may have to replace the fans due to how noisy they are but it does give 2-5 *C cooler temps.

I'm assuming the H110 will fit your case? (It's a 280mm system rather than a 240mm system)

I think it really depends. The H105 has a thicker radiator, but the H110 has a wider one. If you do end up getting the H110 and replacing the fan I would suggest looking into the Akasa Vipers or the Akasa Apaches. They're a lesser known brand, but they get good reviews and the specs are great (quiet, high air flow, high static pressure).

Actually, it looks like the H105 may be louder. Corsair's website says the H110's fans are 35 dB, but the H105's fans are 37.3 dB.
