Forcing a mac pro to be a network appliance and then making it run my network

Edit: Renaming and repurposing the thread

Ok so I am now going to remake this thread. I need a router and I want to set it up so we can have a firewall, a router, and pihole. I have 2 mac pros, one doing fuck all that I will never use, and one that I have pulled out for reimaging. The one I pulled out will be my router.

Will post again after I install stuff

Old Post

Hello all. This may seem stupid but I am trying to help someone out.

I recently got my friend set up with internet service. However whatever router we try doesn’t wanna work. I think my old ones are just caput. Can I install something like opnsense on a laptop and make it a router using the built in wifi card?

Bonus points if I can make it run multiple things like opnsense and pihoile and shit

I don’t know about opnsense, but pfsense doesn’t have great support for wireless built-in, so you may need to color outside the lines a bit. Otherwise, yeah so long as you still have a modem of some kind with an ethernet output, then I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t set it up that way.

Opnsense seems to do drivers better. I will look into it.

It looks like I can in fact do it.

Is there a way to also install pihole to this?
