Hey folks!
Looking for an OS for my new home server build, well it’s an older HP that’s getting a new life. Basically it’s a NAS for file storage and backs ups. Which software (open source preferred) do you recommend for a total n00b? I would like to tinker with vm’s and maybe a media server for the house also.
I was trying some software and installed proxmox and then installed TrueNas Scale as a vm. Am I on the right path or…??
Pic (for attention) is the original drive in the pc I’m using for the server build.
In my opinion having NAS os inside VM is less optimal unless you do passthrough for the SATA and/or nvme to virtual machine. You want your OS to be able to handle storage media failures directly.
How old is this harddrive? One thing you don’t want to cheap out on is your harddrives that would store your important data. If this is for just learning how to create a NAS or less important data then it’s acceptable.

I would run proxmox if you want to go the vm and container route tbch
Then virtualize what you want… And what not.
Id do a lot of reading first and assess your needs and requirements
