First build, what's the damage?

No worries, we all had to start somewhere. ;-)

Nvidia will make sure to let the public know there is something better than Vega on its way pretty quickly.
Intel is a different story. Not sure how much of a super weapon they got in stock. Seems they are pretty hard pressed right now.

Well if we are to take leaked Ryzen specs seriously intel may have to pull their head out of their ass and come up with something to keep AMD at bay. Nvidia....is just gonna be Nvidia and do whatever it wants but maybe, just MAYBE they'll scale some of their higher priced cards down with the coming months.

Well at least no one was giving me hell about it aside from the SSD anyways BUT if it'll keep them from thearing out their hair I might get an SSD..it is what it is though.

  1. Drop that PSU and pick up a cheaper, lower power, fully wired PSU with an 80+ Bronze rating. Gold @ 650W with fully modular cabling is a waste on a budget system.

  2. Spend something on a heatsink, never use stock intel heatsinks if you can avoid it, they are loud.
    Options:

    • Hyper 212 Evo (as @FaunCB suggested).
    • Be Quiet BK010 (much quieter, more expensive).
    • Noctua NH-D15 (almost silent, more expensive, beige quality).
  3. Factor in the price of Windows up front.

  4. Consider switching to a Skylake setup, as the CPU won't change in price but the motherboard will probably drop $40.

  5. Drop the mechanical keyboard; it's the easiest to replace component of the whole system.

  6. Presumably how you have a mouse?

  7. Consider that you will probably end up replacing the system and not upgrading it. This intent often does not come to pass.

If he has a key already he can download windows from microsoft for free.

Apparently not.

Would I be able to get away with the 212 EVO? Admittedly while the stock cooler looks...awful I'm not sure if i would be willing to spend that much on a CPU cooler. I mean as long as it doesn't sound like a vaccuum if I can get one for a more down to earth price for the build I'll take it in a heartbeat.

The reason why I didn't include the OS was because I wanted to try to get a copy whether through relatives or friends or other even if I would still have to spend some money (sub $100).

For the 6th gen processor are we talking the Pentium or the i3 6100 for lower TDP/hyperthreading?

i have a USB mouse so I'm good on that front end I can get an old (OLD) keyboard

i'm not sure what you mean by the last point?

Yes the 212 EVO performs very well in comparison to the stock cooler.

According to that review, it's 50db under load compared to the intel stock cooler which is 54db (remember decibels are a logarithmic scale) while achieving 40C lower temps. I own a couple boxes that use a 212 EVO and I'm happy with it for the price. The stock cooler will work as well, but it will likely cause thermal throttling. Because of the extra temperature room, you can use a fan speed controller to drop the sound levels further.

For the CPU if you go Skylake then you want to try and save as much on the motherboard as possible. Whatever you save there reinvest into the CPU, and then compare the benchmarks.

The last point is related to this quote:

You probably won't actually end up doing this. You might, and this isn't a comment on you personally. I've said that to myself before and not done it too. For instance, sometimes you find that the bottleneck you need to solve is best addressed in a way that requires replacing the motherboard. That means replacing the CPU as well probably. Other times you could upgrade the system, but it's simply easier to save and wait.

Oh also speakers, there is no sound equipment on the list. If you don't have a monitor you probably don't have speakers either.

Well in regards to the CPU i was going to replace it anyway with either a 6700/7000 (I haven't noticed that much of a price difference on pcper) but with the future video card could that current board actually bottleneck the card? Would it have to be more along the lines of somewhere of the Z eries even at stock settings?

Before I forget, I have a headset so the speakers aren't an issue.

So I would pick up a cheap gaming mouse with a decent sensor. I understand not wanting extra buttons, but a good sensor will make all the difference.

eh... that's debatable. But what I will say is a good feel in your hand is a godsend. After hours of gaming my hand would cramp up with the previous mice I've had, but, since switching to a g600 I haven't had any strain whatsoever.

Comfort is everything. I would rather use my old cheap deluxe than my not so old not so cheap a4 because the deluxe is more comfortable. The A4 have the dpi switch, and this is the only reason I haven't thrown it away yet...

Hope you don't rely on PC Part picker for deals, have you used that 15% discount for new customers on Jet.com yet?

anyway, I would suggest hunting on https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ and read comments before you pull the trigger.

most people don't replace individual components, once you're ready to move to a new platform you probably will want to do a new build and leave your current system alone, find a secondary use for it or sell it as is complete.
