So I’m finally getting around to doing my first build and I want you run it by you guys. It will be used for photoshop editing/gaming machine with a little video editing work. I would like to keep it small format because I will be moving it between the office and home some.
To keep the initial cost a bit lower, I am thinking to start with the basics and add some upgrades later like more ram and a GPU.
CPU: i5-4670K
MOBO: Asus Z87I-Deluxe
Ram: Kingston HyperX Beast 8/16GB
SSD: Kingston 120GB SSDnow V300
Case: Really like the EVGA Hadron Air but don’t know if it will be as good for CPU overclocking temps Also like the Silverstone FT03-mini
PSU: 80 Plus power supply if I don’t get the Hadron. What wattage and rating (bronze/silver/gold) do you guys think with this build with some room for future upgrades?
Just a thought, you might want to consider an i7 since you mentioned photo and video editing, though it won't be the primary use. The difference in performance for those applications is worth the extra bucks.
CASE: I have a Fractal Design Node 304. I'd highly recommend it. No space for an ODD though.
PSU: Any decent 550W PSU should do. I have an XFX PRO550W in mine. If you use the FD Node 304, and want a modular PSU, make sure it's ~140mm or the plugs are close to the fan side of the psu, as it might hit the GPU if it's too long.
GPU: GTX 770 would be better.
CPU: If you're only doing light video editing, you could probably get by with an i5. An i7 would be optimal, but expensive.
It would be a bit better in your productivity applications. Just make sure to get a motherboard that can handle the power hungry 8 core AMD FX-8350. If you have any single-threaded or poorly optimized programs/games, the Intel will perform better.
i'll update to a i7 and a Asus rog gene mobo next july, and to a modular PSU because i want a small case, remember that if you want a small caase a Modular PSU will be great
