Finding the right networking rackmount for this corner

I have this little corner filled with some networking junk (10G switch, custom router, UPS, wi-fi AP and a printer).

I have a full sysrack upstairs for my homelab (they’re cheap; what some people call “gamer racks”). But down here I’d like something small I can rack some gear into so it’s no longer this mess.

I’ve considered something like the Rack Solutions 12U rack

A little expensive, but not too bad, and it should support the weight of that printer on top. But I really don’t like the enclosed sides. It makes dealing with hardware more difficult, especially with all my networking cables coming out of that wall.

StarTech has these decent open racks with casters

…but without a top cover, I’d have to find someplace else for the printer. Rack Solutions sells a top for their Open Frame 111 Rack, but none of their open frame racks are small (12U or less) units.

Ideally I’d like a short (12U or less) open frame rack with casters and a top sturdy enough to support a laser printer. Any ideas/suggestions?

Can recommend the startech racks. I’ve got one here. Pretty nifty.

If you want a top for it, you could get a rack shelf which covers the full depth. Some of those are adjustable, which can work out well.

No top, but that’s not hard to work out.

I have some shelves but they only attach at the front, and the printer is quite heavy. I guess I could get adjustable ones that attach at both sides. I have some spare wood blocks I could raise the print on so I can get to the paper tray (or if the printer is far back enough, I could probably pull out the tray even with the printer sunken down into the shelf.

Yea I did see those, but was concerned about how I’d do the top … will take a look at them again. Thanks.

EDIT: Found some posts elsewhere that recommended using this Ikea cutting board as a top for the Ubiquity

Local home improvement center and get a wood panel and cut it down to size / paint or stain it and bob’s your uncle!

I used to have a similar rack myself and was very happy with it. I just put a piece of plywood on top and painted black to match. Made a pretty solid solution and looked pretty decent.

I would think that a piece of 1/4" plywood would be enough. You could probably use the holes for the handles to secure it, although the handles might get in the way of the printer.

If you don’t mind going full redneck with the plywood, then yeah save yourself a few bucks and just do that.

I’d go fairly thicc on the plywood though. Probably 1/2 or 3/4. Wobbly plywood under a 3D printer is no bueno.
