File Explorer breaking

Recently, when using File explorer, firstly, it takes ages to load (On an SSD) and when I scroll, it crashes. This happenes in Firefox when searching for a file aswell.

This has only been happening since a few days ago.

This is what it looks like for ages, and it never loads.

explorer issues are always difficult to diagnose since it's such a a complicated program and hard disk issues tend to become apparent when explorer starts misbehaving.

Download Autoruns
exectue autoruns.exe
switch to the explorer tab

Everything on that list is junk you've installed that explorer doesn't need to operate. Any one of those entries could be the reason why it's crashing.

Uncheck some, restart computer, see if problem disapears. If it doesn't, recheck them (to enable the entries) and try different entries until you narrow down the problematic extension.

Next change your hard disk

Download WD's "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows" and run the quick test to see if it's any serious hd error.

If it's not that, the next thing to do is to run spinrite if you still suspect it's a hd issue or to continue to play with the entries in autoruns' explorer tab. That's also assumes that the explorer issues arent' tied to attempts to access network resources.
