Back in 2022, before expo was a thing and when high capacity DDR5 was a bit harder to find, I built a system with 64gb of DDR5-6000 (F5-6000J3238G32GX2-TZ5K), a 7950X, and an ASUS X670E-I motherboard.
Despite the memory not being on the QVL, it ran rock solid with no issues UNTIL I flashed a BIOS update. Then it stopped POSTing. To make matters worse, ASUS doesn’t allow for the BIOS to be rolled back…I tried any way, no luck, finally, to top it all off, the board fell off from the motherboard box it was on, into the case, shorted, and caught on fire. The board was toast after that.
I recently picked up a Gigabyte X670 AORUS ELITE WIFI 7 board in hopes to bring the system back to life, but the board shows the red DRAM light and doesn’t boot, even with 1 stick, even with a BIOS update.
Has anyone successfully used this RAM in an AMD system? Does anyone have any advice? I don’t even know if the CPU and RAM still works at this point, and I have no easy way to test either due to limited funds (I am disabled).
It’s kind of sad to see a BIOS update make RAM compatibility worse.
Disconnect all power from the board and either; reset the BIOS by either shorting the BIOS reset pins (CLR_CMOS) for a few seconds, or by removing the CMOS battery and then replacing it after a few seconds.
Re-connect the power to the board and power it on… and wait.
The DRAM light should start to blink (this means the memory is trying to train)
Do nothing for at least 10 minutes (it can take over 5 minutes with some boards to train the memory).
Either it will boot or the memory will fail to train and there’s not a lot you can probably do about it as you have already updated the BIOS.
Obviously there are other factors in that you don’t know if the memory is good, or the board/processor is good either unless you have tried them with other components.
Disable RAM OC if you haven’t already. I’ve only ever had PCs fail to boot when the RAM size exceeded the CPU or motherboard’s support. Once you get that running, then you’ll likely have to manually optimize the RAM again.
