“Windows To Go” doesn’t care about complete system changes, though I am unsure if it would like cloning it to a different drive. Basically it’s a windows install mode specifically for being able to arbitrarily plugging in somewhere. It requires a certain windows type to install from to have the option available in Rufus, if you’re curious I can check my notes later.
This is actually the second iteration of me doing this. The previous setup was a Samsung nvme drive in an enclosure, which worked fine until the Samsung drive decided it wanted to corrupt it’s firmware.
bit of a minefield this one…
a few years ago i would say grab a usb dock and an ssd.
knowing that you would likely have to replace your dock occasionally. but would be able to access the drive with any kind of usb plug.
but since the likes of gdpr, most companies in europe/us/uk limit what data can and cant be accessed by there employee’s.
so while you might want to take files home, you may not legally be able to.
so yeah mate just a heads up, you might want to check before you take any work data as it could see you in trouble if you take it, and then find out your in breach of new regulations. gdpr had recent updates
if your within spec for gdpr and the likes. and if the data is written daily to your backup. then you may want a remote nas running raid 5/10 or similar storage+redundancy and maybe a ssd dock you can plug in once in a while to take your quarterly’s.
but know anything you can plug in with data on it is a security hazard and your soc/it guy might not be happy about you plugging random devices into his network
