Expanding My Homelab into a Hybrid Cloud

AI Disclosure:
I use ChatGPT to research technical solutions, troubleshoot issues and make sure that my implementation is somewhat secure. I may use AI to help with scripting if needed. I will remain responsible for implementing, testing, and understanding everything I will be adding to my current homelab.
Finally, I will be using AI to make diagrams to help me explain what i’m doing.

For this Devember, my goal is to expand my existing homelab into a hybrid cloud environment using an OVHcloud VPS to experiment with networking, security, and automation.
Since this is my first time participating, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and share a bit about my background before getting into the project.

I’m a French-speaking IT teacher living in Quebec for almost 6 years mainly in system administration. I started my journey in homelabbing as a hobby but rapidly evolved into a way to practice and help me understand in more details what i’m teaching to my students.

My current homelab a relatively simple setup. First, I use OPNsense as firewall, DHCP and VPN server on a firewall box bought on Aliexpress many years ago. Then for my networking I use a collection of managed and unmanaged switches from netgear and TPlink. Finally, the heart of my homelab, Atlas, my proxmox server. Atlas is a combination of several parts from my previous gaming PCs.

Atlas :

  • OS : Proxmox VE
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • RAM : 64 GB
  • GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 (for jellyfin transcode)
  • Networking : 1 × 2.5 GbE PCIe ethernet card
  • SATA SSDs : 5 × 1 TB Crucial MX500
  • NVMe SSD : 1 × 1 TB Western Digital WDS100T2B0C
  • Hard drives : 4 × 8 TB Seagate ST8000VN004-3CP101

Ans finally, on the software side, I host multiple services accessible for my personal and professional use.

I think that I’m not going to go into more detail about the specifics of my services but don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions

My project for devember :

As I explained, I use my server as a sandbox to learn and practice concepts and tools that I can eventually integrate into my courses.
My goal is to extend my existing homelab by integrating an OVHcloud VPS to build a hybrid cloud environment. I want to experiment with networking, security, VPNs, automation, monitoring, and self-hosted services in a real-world setup.

For my off site server I chose to get an OVH VPS-1 mainly because they have hosts in Quebec.
I plan to implement a reverse proxy (caddy ?), a Headscale server (to compare with tailscale), some off-site monitoring for my homelab and a automation setup with Ansible to prepare my CI/CD environnement. The connection to my homelab will be handled by a site to site wireguard vpn.

Thats the plan !
Tell me guys what you think, especially if you’ve done something similar.

First step : Getting the VPS

The first thing I need to get is the VPS. This may seem easy, but the VPS-1 2027 from OVH is constantly out of stock, especially if you want one hosted in Beauharnois (Quebec).

Since product availability is unpredictable, I decided to develop a script that checks stock levels every two minutes. As soon as the VPS becomes available in Quebec, I receive an alert on Discord.

And now I just need to wait.
